I’m attending a 4 week seminar next week on St. Ignatius’ practice of discernment. I haven’t read Spiritual Excercises or any other works by the saint. I’m looking for recommendations or links to articles online that might provide a good overview and/or introduction to his teachings. I’ll try to tackle the Excercises before next Tuesday but I’m not sure I’ll be able to finish it.

Thanks for any info!

Whoa! No way you can do anything realistic with the Ignatian Exercises before next Tuesday. What do you mean “4-week seminar”? Four single sessions? You don’t mean that you’re going off for a month to undertake the exercises, do you? I ask because the Exercises are organized into four “weeks.”

I don’t know much about Ignatian things except for the Examen, which I use periodically for examination of conscience.

There is a 30 day retreat developed by St. Ignatius that is very similar to the 12 Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous as developed by Bill Wilson. In fact, after the publishing of the Book, Alcoholics Anonymous Bill was contacted by a Jesuit Priest by the name of Father Ed Dowling. Father Ed was so struck by the similarity between the two discliplines that he often lead retreats for Catholics in AA that combined aspects of what St. Ignatius developed with the 12 Steps.

Amazing story - to me it proves how God works in every day lives to save lives every day.
