An analysis of recent census data indicates that the presence of illegal aliens in California is costing the state’s taxpayers more than $10.5 billion per year for education, medical care and incarceration.

The report, written by the Federation of American Immigration Reform, or FAIR, states that even if the tax contributions of illegal aliens are subtracted, state government outlays still amount to nearly $9 billion a year.

The $10.5 billion figure translates into a burden to native-born residents of $1,183 per household.

I don’t have to read the paper to know it’s about killing our schools, especially the primary schools. The district had to put in an entirely separate “Head Start” for illegals because the kids didn’t know about hygiene and proper behavior. IOW you can’t go potty in a corner of the room. It’s not the kids’ fault as many are from migrant farm families and truly they live in dreadful conditions. But more and more are staying here rather than going home at the end of the season.

I also work in a hospital and of course the emergency room is PACKED with illegals (oh how do I know right? well the fact they cannot speak English, have no identification, and no permanent address is my first set of clues). Not only has the hospital had to ramp up with translators but they are absorbing a fortune in unpaid healthcare.

I know give us your tired and huddled masses, but I wish they would come here LEGALLY.

This is the land flowing with milk and honey. I don’t begrudge Mexicans for wanting a better life here. It’s a shame life in Mexico is so terrible.

Maybe we should just send in the Marines to straighten out Mexico and make it like the U.S.

As GB has threatened to do so in the rest of the world I suppose it makes sense to start close to home!!!

I don’t begrudge anyone from wanting a better life here. But there are legal ways of coming, and they need to use those.

I am not sure how far it is down the list:rolleyes:

Since this is just a thread where we can say what we think the solution should be I would like to add a few thoughts.

I teach for a coop that services many immigrant districts. We have many Arab/American children, Mexican/American, and also Polish/American children. I don’t ever know who is legal or illegal unless we recommend a doctors visit for some reason. It happens fairly often in special ed. due to the complications the children have.

I don’t think it would be morally right for us to turn any of these children away. I think the answer is to make the parents legal, and begin to work the system that way. I think the borders should be harder to cross.

My daughter just went to Spain to study and they were very thorough about who they would let in, as they should be. Why can’t we begin to do that with anyone entering our country.

Employers should face a huge fine if they hire illegals. I don’t care what it would mean. I am not saying that the people shouldn’t be here ever, but they should have to be legal.

We have the laws on the books now to take care of this problem, but they have not been enforced by either party. Just this week, they were looking for some Asian people and two others in the Boston area, that might be making a dirty bomb. They came accross the Mexican border. It’s really stupid to check the airlines so closely, and leave the borders wide open for everybody and anybody to come in. When are we going to wise up?

One of those suspects has been in custody before this story came to light. They are beginning to believe this story was fabricated.

Fitz I am in total agreement. We cannot let innocent children suffer but the real problem is that we do NOT enforce the rules. Years ago there WAS quite a bit of enforcement regarding illegal aliens and it was directed toward the employers who hire them. If employers actually faced stiff fines, raids, and the sudden loss of their entire dishwashing/road/construction/or landscaping crew they would comply with the rules.

I don’t know if the Bush ‘guest worker’ plan is a good one or not. But SOME kind of documentation when people come here so they they may be employed legally, will pay taxes, and comply with other laws will go a long way to improving the situation. In this state illegals can get drivers’ licencs, free health care, public schooling that even accommodates their special needs (language and interpretation). Do I blame people for coming? No. But I do blame a weak system of enforcement that would at least help us distinguish the ‘bad guys.’ We have a lot of crime from the illegal community, mostly drugs but it’s getting into violent crimes, gangs, etc. A system of identification and tracking would make a difference.
