I’m a bit worried about the CAF software. I got a link to a post which has nothing to do with me. Why does the CAF software link me to posts in topics which I had nothing to do with? Here is the post in question:

"God shelters us in Himself...He bears us in Himself Spirituality
Amen to that! That is how I feel and think about Mary. What madness it would be to ignore her!
It didn’t hurt me, I’m not angry or anything, but I’m a little concerned that the software seems to have ‘misfired’ in this way. Has anybody else had this happen to them?

It seems to me that you should only be referred to something you actually had something to do with, like say you posted something and somebody ‘hearted’ your post, or somebody responded to your post.

Speaking as a programmer, I only want things to happen that are supposed to happen. I don’t tolerate any degree of randomness (unless of course the randomness is deliberately programmed in, but that isn’t what this is about) whatsoever.

So, what do you think? Software ‘misfire’ or not?

So, you’re saying that you were randomly referred to a certain post on a certain thread?

Are you sure that somebody didn’t invite you to the Thread?

Randomly invite me? I didn’t know you could do such a thing. How are we supposed to do that?

That is a possibility.

Also, check at the bottom of the thread and see if says you are watching the thread. If you wish to not be following, change it to mute.

Well, I’m watching it now, but when I got the link in my activities, I had never seen that thread before.

I have been summoned to this thread! What’s up? Did someone need a second programmer opinion?

Perhaps yes. I now see that among the things we can do, we can press a share or link thingy; is that how we’re supposed to get other people to look at a post?

That’s how I generally do it. If it’s a post in the same thread, I’ll quote it:

But if it’s from another thread, I’ll link the post:

Questions about Catholics honoring Mary Sacred Scripture
It makes me sad to see Protestants dictate to me that my behavior is worship, as if I’m too dumb to know the difference between how I speak and act with God and how I speak and act with one of His creatures, or that I don’t know what I’m doing. It’s incredibly condescending.

OK, so how do I pick a target recipient? Maybe I should try linking something to Fauken . . .

On my post there should be an arrow on the bottom right hand corner. You can use that to reply to me specifically. I use the mobile version so I’m not sure if it works the same way on the computer, but if you want to quote something from my post, highlight it and a quote button should appear. The bottom left should have a chain button, and that is to get a URL to the post.

I sometimes recommend threads to specific friends:

I do those two things already, but how do I target a specific person about a random post in another thread?

Yes, I see that. I did try pushing the link symbol prior to this, but I got something much more abbreviated than what is in Cruciferi’s post. I only got an option to email the post to somebody that isn’t here, or send it to facebook or twitter . . .

I think I tried referring you to this thread. I also got a bit of an apology from the person who liked me to that thread with the strange reference, which I now think was accidental.

Well, I learned something new, so I’m thankful for that. 🙂

This is why I’m not a huge fan about programming on the front end. As one of my coworkers told me, a UI is like a joke: it isn’t good if you have to explain it. 😛

Thank you for all of your help Fauken, and thank you to all who answered. 🙂
