I am sorry you had this experience. Any Christian, whether Catholic or Protestant should never be ashamed (or blatantly adamant against the notion, in this gentleman’s case) that they are Christian.

If any of you haven’t already noticed, and if you’re like me, always look at a members profile to see their religion. I find myself many times shaking my head when I see many Protestants labelling themselves as “Christian” - as if Catholics are not!!

I appreciate what you are saying; some posters would be making the distinction in the manner you spoke of; however if we think about it; writing ‘Christian’ is not technically wrong, because that is our religion; our faith practices determine what we are within the strictures of our religion. (i.e. Catholic, Methodist, Anglican, Lutheran, etc, but all fall within the religion of ‘Christian’)
Muslim’s, Hinu’s, Buddists, etc would probably have ‘denominational’ differences like Christians, but you would not object if they refered to themselves as Hindu’s etc.

The problem isn’t with us Catholics, it is with SOME Catholics. Mainly the problem is with the Catholic In Name Only (CINO) Catholics and the Christmas and Easter (C&E) Catholics who do not know the first thing about the faith. They generally are the fuel that continues to fire the wrong image a lot of protestants have about our faith.

There are also what I like to call Sunday only Catholics (SOC), I came in contact with them in college. These are Catholics who for some reason go to church on Sunday but whose lives Monday-Saturday are nothing in line with Catholic-Christian teachings.

For example on Ash Wednesday evening two years ago one of the guys who lived two doors down from me was trying to get me to look at porn on his computer, I told him I wasn’t interested, then he looked at his watch and told me he had to go to Mass anyways and that he was being cup-bearer that night… :ehh:

This reply is common among uncatechized RC, as well as with our Protestant bros and sis.I’ve heard it several times and would correct them about it.

I finally realized what the right answer is:

“I’m sorry sir, I stand corrected and I certainly recognize now that you are not a Christian.”**

Then for added measure, "I will not make that mistake again."

To those who think I mean this tongue-in-cheek, I do not. In fact, if I hear this sort of tripe coming my way I just might answer in agreement with the person. Who am I to tell a man he follows Christ when he just said, explicitly, that he does not? :whacky:

Why should we pussyfoot around these people? They know their hearts better than I do. Clearly they are not an understanding, practicing Catholic so if a person says this kind of nonsense let’s not give them any slack. I’m ready to pick-and-choose the worst part of what they say and agree with them; let them dig themselves out of the hole they’ve dug. It won’t do any good for me to, or certainly they’d have gotten a clue by now.

I was unaware that I wasn’t Christian, I better stop praying to Christ then.
