Hi everyone, I’ve been going to Trinitine Mass for a year and a half now. May 26th I was Baptised, Confirmed, recieved Communion and was Married. 👍 On and off Ive been nosing around in this forum reading different things I had questions about that I might could get answered without having to pester my new husband (then Boyfriend) about & I want to thank you all for your postings and let you know you have helped me with issues I needed answers to. I grew up in a family with no religion but always was intrested in different denominations and beliefs-how happy I am to find the Truth and to have recieved the Blessed Sacraments! I have not been exposed to the New Order Mass much although I have been a few times and do find it very disturbing some of the things I have witnessed there such as the “female” alter boys & the “greetings” But most disturbing to me the handeling of the Eucharist. I would be intrested in your opinions.
 
I hate to think I stand out like a sore thumb, but I might, since I still take communion on the tongue! I was an altar boy, taught not to handle the Eucharist, held a patten under people’s chins in case there was a slip-up, etc.

Yeah, I don’t much like the idea of people putting the Holy Eucharist in their hands. Especially since we’ve learned that AIDS isn’t too likely to be spread that way (which I understand was the reason for the change).
 
I think one reason why many in the church are against the widespread return of the Tridentine Mass is that aberrations in the implementation of the New Mass become more distiguishable. I, for one, hope that the MP will give people an opportunity to see where we’ve been. That may help us as far as where we are headed.
 
Please be careful not to compare the TLM with the NOM or make any denigrating remarks about any legitimate liturgy of the Church. Thank you.

In the U.S., there is a provision for parishioners to receive the Eucharist in the hand or on the tongue.

I receive in the hand. In the U.S., this is Cool with the Vatican. I wish that people on this Board would quit implying that there is something “wrong” with this practice…
 
I think it would be stretching it to say that it is “cool” with the Vatican. They allowed it. Homiletic and Pastoral Review has a good article on this phenomena.

I think the Pope intends for there to be discussions about the TLM vs. NOM. He obviously does not expect a wholesale return to the TLM. So why is he thinking of encouraging it so much? He wants us to know our heritage and talk about it.

If we are given the opportunity to see how the Mass has grown organically throughout the ages, then we can see what parts of the NOM (including all the indults, rescripts, allowances, options, abuses, etc…) are not in tune with that development. I don’t think any changes in the NOM would be the drastic overhaul that many traditionalists pine for. But if the church is going to realize the vision of the Council, we need to know what was the starting point of their deliberations. It is a job for the hierarchy, but the lay people have the right to demand proper liturgy. How can we know if the Catholic ethos is preserved if we don’t have anyhting to compare it to?

I, for one, would love to see a Latin NOM as the norm. But if it is going to happen, the Church needs to be honest about how we may have gotten sidetracked from the V2 vision. We need to tlak about it instead of deny it.

Wrong? You should know that before the Vatican was so “cool” with it, it was considered a sacrilege for one to even touch the Eucharist with his/her teeth. That means, it was grounds for a mortal sin.

Sacrilege is still a mortal sin, as far as I know. In fact, somewhere in Canon Law, I believe you’re excommunicated if you toss fragments (even tiny ones) of the sacred species away, but I’ll have to find it.

Point is, why take the risk?
 
Point is, the Vatican has given permission in the U.S. to take Communion on the hand.

Are you saying that the Vatican is promoting mortal sin?

If I am not understanding you, please forgive me.

No, I’m saying draw your own conclusions about taking an unnecessary risk of tossing small fragments away. And you can rationalize how large they have to be before you are excommunicated. Don’t forget Christ exists on sub-microscopic levels so even if you rub on it… I think you get the idea. (Wish I could put some Twilight Zone music here.😃 )
 
I was under the imoression that according to the Memoriale Domini taking the Eucharist in hand was only for contrary usage.

When did this change? At TLM I attend the Host is too large for it not to touch my teeth & I always feel guilty about it.

I attend the Novus Ordo most of the time. Latin masses are hard to come by. 🤷

Most people are comfortable with the practices established in the Liturgy after Vatican II. Of course, the more conservative one gets, the more it becomes an issue.

I attend the Traditional Mass on espescially holy days. I must say that I agree that the Eucharist is treated with great dignity. However, the mass one attends does not make a difference. Jesus told us to “do this in remembrance of Me,” and that is exactly what each mass does. Good or not as good is a subjective issue. At that point it becomes a matter of preference.
