I'm considering joining a monastery; question about different orders

My two non-Christian passions are playing guitar and politics/history (such as Abraham Lincoln), so are there any orders that allow both of these things? Or do most allow these?
 
I believe that it would probably depend on the individual monastery (during their recreation time), however besides checking with some nearby, you could ask this question in the vocations section of this board.
 
Depends on what you mean by “monastery”. What specific order do you feel called to join?

That is what will make a difference.

Well, I don’t know. That’s why I’m asking. I was thinking of the Order of Friars Minor.

OFM are not monks, they are friars. There is a difference.

Have you contacted any groups?

I see you live in DC, there are many religious orders in the area, have you visited any of them?

The best way to get information is first hand. That way you can experience it and see if it is a fit for you.
 
Guitars would certainly be fine in monasteries. They would certainly be welcome during Recreation. You would likely have to practice your guitar playing well away from the cloister/enclosure.

A teaching order, or a monastery that runs a high school or university would probably love a history teacher or professor. do you have an MA in that field or a Teaching Certificate?

The Jesuits teach and support maintaining skills and hobbies. So do the Benedictine men, who run a number of schools and colleges in this country.
 
We are a monastery in Chesterfield , NJ and your playing of your musical instrument would be so helpful at our daily liturgies. We meet for the Divine Office about 5 times a day and of course there is Mass.We have a Sister who is a music major and teaches 4 sisters to play the organ. As to politics we discuss them among ourselves and share our knowledge with others but we are not a teaching order.
We are the Poor Clares of the order of Saint Clare founded in 1212 or there about.

I just happened to run into this thread via Google… and I thought I’d stop in to point out that comments such as these are incredibly off-putting.

If this guy is interested in making such an overwhelming commitment, then maybe you could take a moment to respond with less arrogance. And more helpfulness. Much more helpfulness. For example, explaining the difference, rather than just trying to slap down his query with some kind of alpha garbage.

It’s this precise sort of situation that has kept me - and many, many more like me - from taking the Church seriously… because there are so many people in it like you. “Shut up and sit down” doesn’t fly in modern America; in fact, I’d wager any amount of money that such an attitude has the exact opposite effect.

I’m the original poster, and I haven’t the faintest clue what you’re going on about. I typically like it when I’m corrected on minor errors.

Incidentally, the original post is almost three years old and I’m still indecisive on the matter. I’m leaning towards the Dominicans.

Woah. What? Brother David is one of the best posters around here and also a very nice chap. His post wasn’t arrogant at all. Your post however, is not only uncharitable but also extremely offensive and childish. People like Brother David have kept you from taking the Church seriously I mean really.
 
this is an interesting forum… difficult for me as a new person.
I want to give the rest of my life to Jesus. This is what I consider a monastery. I want to be taken care of while I life the rest of my life to pray.

I live in Southern California. I want to be in a nice place.
