I'm having trouble with Purgatory.

I can’t wrap my mind around purgatory. If ALL of our riotousness is as filthy rags in God sight then dosent everyone go to purgatory and then why did Jesus die on the cross? for just part of our sin? I’m currently in rcia and I just can’t beleive in this doctrine. Help me here>>>
