Apologetics is a very long road; you have to start somewhere and you must commit yourself to constant learning. And, you have to be patient. It is very tempting at first to want to just jump in and defend the faith at all costs. But like starting off in any endeavor, you need to learn the basics first.
Just laying the foundation can take well over a year…and by that I mean reading the Bible through and reading the Catechism through; since a vast majority of apologetic arguments will reference them, they are necessary to be familiar with. No need to memorize, but be familiar. But read them.
Then, you realize that there is a hierarchy of apologetics: the belief in God, why the Christian God is the right God, why Jesus is also God, why the Catholic Church is the true Church…and then down to specific apologetic issues, like abortion, contraception, etc.
If you specifically want to concentrate in apologetics against Protestants, I still suggest starting off with the Bible and Catechism; obviously, you shouldn’t really need to defend the belief in God or Jesus to a Protestant.
But you will need to be familiar with the major topics like Mary, the sacraments, Catholic Old Testament vs. Protestant, the Papacy, different beliefs on salvation, etc.
EWTN has a good show called “Blue Collar Apologetics” hosted by John Martignioni. He also has a website called “Bible Christian Society.” He focuses primarily on apologetics in response to Protestant arguments. Steve Ray also has a very good website - just look him up. Dave Armstrong has a good site called “Biblical Evidence for Catholicism.” Often, Catholic converts are your best resources since they are already familiar with Protestant beliefs.
But, start with books…websites and blogs usually aren’t organized in a useful fashion for having a starting point and logical progression through issues. There is a good book called “The Protestant’s Dilemma” by a Catholic Answers author that is a good starting point. Good luck!
