As a Lutheran, I feel closer unity with Catholicism than American “evangelicalism”. So, yes, to say all protestants have some form of unity beyond all being Christian (same as we share with Catholics and Orthodox), is a fiction.

I think it’s great that you feel an affinity to Roman Catholicism, but I have to say that most Lutherans I talk to you are the opposite of you. They identify better with Presbyterians or Baptists before they will identify with Catholics. I see Lutherans and Anglicans (who both have more in common with Catholics mostly) get in “promise-keepers” and go to Billy Graham type stuff and attend VBS at evangelical churches, on and on. It seems like there is more evangelical twinge to Lutherans than any sense of brotherhood with Catholics.

In my town, it seems the only folks who feel tight with Roman Catholics are Roman Catholics! The Anglicans are extremely proud that they are NOT Roman Catholics lol…

Wouldn’t it be great if we have unity - then gneralizations will be no problem.

If that happens someday, then when one says Christians this and that…then we do not have to ask “which Christians? Do you mean Catholic, Lutheran, or Baptists? …”.

Pray for unity.

Identify with Baptists? Goodness. No offense to our Baptist siblings, but their beliefs regarding Baptism and the Eucharist are so foreign to me. I have great respect for Billy Graham, and VBS is, well, VBS… Well, let’s put it this way, were I in a position where I had to choose between Catholic and almost any other protestant church, like moving to a small town with a Catholic, Baptist, and non-denom, I’d opt for the Eucharist, confession, and a liturgy. Guess which one my choice would be.

Thanks, Jon. I read your post few months back - You are one of the few on CAF whom I could remember praying for unity. (PS: not implying that others are not praying for the purpose.)
