I think that many rubbish ‘catholic’ films/books/comics which have ideas and plots ripped off of Catholic beliefs (such as End of Days (1999), Babylon AD, The Reaping, the Exorcist sequels) and many Protestant novels fail big time in the supposed message they’re trying to send: they don’t dwell in God’s (and Mary’s of course!) psychology. They depict HIm as being strong and almighty and that is it. They don’t depict Him as loving or human. It isn’t enough that we know that God can do anything whenever He can. He can’t be used ONLY as a driving force of the film.

The same is to be said for Mary in novels about Her. I never saw on Amazon a single novel about Her which is true to the real Virgin Mary, the Virgin Mary we all love and worship*. I’m not going to make Her into a flat character but am going to dwell in Her psychology. People though will say that nobody çan depict Her psychology and feelings accurately because: a) She’s a real person so you can’t make things up about Her, and b) you can’t read Her mind so that you could write down what She thinks and feels, and c) She doesn’t appear to you like how She did to the children of Fatima or to Saint Bernadette.

Well of course Mary doesn’t appear to me but that doesn’t mean that we can’t find out what She is thinking. Not only do we have the writings of the Saints, but we have the Rosary which Mary gave us to become intimate with Her, to know aht passes through Her head and to learn from Her. I’m not going to depict the Blessed Virgin as a simple, sinful woman like how that blasted Protestant film The Nativity Story depicted Her, I’m going to depict Her as a nice, gracious Queen who neverthless suffers because of Her Son and Her children.

*Do I have to say that there are three kinds of worship, one called hyperdulia which we give to Mary alone? Ahem!

I need some knowledge on mixing attitude and deep-third person penetration. Motives are what make characters act in the way they do (eg: Batman fights crime because he wants to protect the innocent after becoming a victim himself) while attitude is their verall reaction to outside events (eg: Batman feels disgust at the sick things which the Joker does, whereas other criminals may feel that the Joker acted justly).

Then there is penetration, which makes us see things through the characters eyes. I’m not talking about first person at all, this all has to do with third person but these degrees vary. There is limited (or light) penetration in which we see the scenes the POV character is in and see inside his head but we don’t experience the scenes as if they were experienced by the character himself, only getting the character’s attitudes when the narrator dips away from the scene and into the character’s head. The Harry Potter books are like this as also are the Lord of the Rings.

Then we have deep penetration, in which we experience the scenes as the character experiences them. The narrator doesn’t have to say “He thought”, because we already are experiencing the character’s thoughts and attitudes without such tags. Stephen King’s books and some horror novels are like this.

But I fear that I would overuse the attitude and deep penetration bit. Orson Scott Card said that he’s read many stories where the author provided deep penetration in the most pointless and slowest bits, while others provided only light penetration when the story itself was shouting to be penetrated deeply. Can anyone please give me advice? Thanks.

Something hit me today while writing my book. In the opening scene, I was going to show the Blessed Virgin looking in hopeless despair upon the world as it is becoming so corrupt, but then i realized that I can’t do that. Why? Because the Blessed Virgin is the Mother of Mercy. She would never lose hope of saving us but with Her confidence in God, with Her love for us as Her main weapon, and with Her hand strangling the devil’s neck:D She works and She works hard for our salvation that we may be saved. She doesn’t wear a mask and go out in the streets fighting crime of course, and neither does She go into hell to beat the devils up but She is our Mother and a Mother always works hard for the good of Her child and leads him/her by the hand.

Also, the Riddler isn’t going to appear in the book, and neither is Mr. Freeze. And forget Robin this isn’t some campy… oh, wait a minute, I’m going off track here!

The deaths of Agnes and Tom in Pillars of the Earth were very sad. I felt so empty when Agnes died:(.
