I see a tree that has had bark stripped off, with pitch naturally forming from the wound to the tree. Possibly the wood below it (that is, where the bark has been stripped off) has been carved or otherwise shaped. Given the flow of pitch, it appears that it was not a naturally created wound

I see a top-down view of a beaver swimming in a lake. I’m impressed that the article mentions the phenomena of pareidolia which is what this is a case of.

I can see the Virgin, and it looks like she is holding something up to her face, but it doesn’t look like a baby. Maybe a book.

I can also see the beaver now that someone’s mentioned it.

Coming from a Catholic backround I would have seen the Virgin in it had I happened across it, but I don’t think it’s a sign from God, but just the habit of the brain to find patterns in things.

Yes, this is the pareidolia that is mentioned in the article.

The human brain is structured to make meaning out of (name removed by moderator)ut, and tries to organize that (name removed by moderator)ut into a familiar and recognizable structure.

I’m amused that the article reports that many think it’s “a perfect likeness” to Mary…when…we don’t know what she looked like!
And the image on the tree doesn’t have any specific facial features.
How can it be a perfect likeness?

.
Im not saying that it is a genuine manifestation in this tree. But it is important to remember that we have a generally accepted idea of what the Virgin looks like. So if the Lord or Mary herself wanted to give us a sign, He or she would know exactly what to make it look like…it would look like our paintings and statues…or else nobody would recognize it as the Virgin, and it would be worthless.

I am always amazed at the distinct dis-similarity between WASC (White, Anglo-Saxon Catholic) images of Mary - in particular the plethora of statutes - and the image imprinted on a tilma.

As am I also. As well as the White, blue eyed, blonde haired, sharp nosed Caucasian Christ.
