Hearing the song from John Lennon: his song portrays an ideal view of society. I wanted to know why is religion needed because it seems to add more pressure. Also, I wanted to discuss why this view is not possible.

*Imagine there’s no heaven
It’s easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today…
Imagine there’s no countries
It isn’t hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace…

You may say I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope someday you’ll join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine no possession
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world…

You may say I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope someday you’ll join us
And the world will live as one *

🤷

Human’s seem to have a religious instinct, perhapse someday there won’t be religion, for now there is.

The purpose of religion should be to point us towards something “bigger” then ourselves and to explain that which can’t be explained without outside help or revelation, such as where we come from, why are we here and where are we going. If someone chooses to kill for a religion, especially if it’s a religion which teaches that selfish motives are the problem and that love is the goal, then I would say that they are actually denying what their religion teaches and pursuing very selfish human ways instead. If Lennon’s imagined “religionless” world were realized, people would simply continue to kill for whatever other reasons they come up with already. “Nothing to die for” sounds like a life with little to live for.

That’s right. It’s an ideal. It’s not reality as we know it. It’s not possible given the existence of evil in the world. Religion doesn’t add more pressure (whatever that means) to the world. It’s a natural part of the world because it involves the human seeking the Divine.

Peace…

Religion is simply answering the biggest questions. Science is answering the “how” questions of the physical universe. Philosophy is answering the “why, and how do we know” questions of thought, and politics is answering the “how” questions of human laws and governing systems. All the other questions together don’t affect as much as religion does. It’s not going anywhere.
John Lennon imagined a world where people lived in peace and unity without religion. He had to imagine it because he couldn’t observe it. We all need to think about the big questions sometimes. Thwarted in that natural and healthy drive, we suffer in our souls and hurt one another.

To a certain extent, that was Eden, though it depends on how you interpret certain phrases. Then we decided we didn’t want that.
