Hey guys,
I was just reading this Wikipedia article about the worship of the Holy Name and the Russian Orthodox condemnation of the practice of worshipping the Holy Name of God as God Himself. This is the first time I‘ve come across such a belief. I couldn’t help but wonder what we as Catholics have to say about this. Do we also consider it heresy? Is it even an issue in our Church?

Pax Christi.

I’ve seen this type of belief in Kabbalah with the 72 names of God etc. It’s superstitious at best, I’d think. Catholics don’t attribute “magical” powers to His name, but we do venerate it as holy. I don’t know if there’s ever been a need to address that in the western church, hopefully someone else can weigh in there.

Catholics praise the Holy Name of God and the Holy Name of Jesus, for example in the Divine Praises prayer said at Benediction that begins, “Blessed be God. Blessed be his Holy Name…” and also on the feast day dedicated to the Holy Name of Jesus.

We do not believe that the name itself is God.
