Immaterial soul and counciousness

How I can argue that the soul and counciousness exist, but is not material, is not palpable. He told me “If i destroy your brain, you will not continue to be counciousness, this is beacuse your counciousness is somewhere in your brain, and is material.”
 
The soul gives us the power to think and be conscious. The brain utilizes that power. It could be said that the soul gives us the potentiality to be conscious, but the body/brain turns that potentiality into actuality.
Hold on, though – I think there’s a problem in defining things that way… that would imply that we are only conscious while bodily alive, and that, when we die, we are no longer conscious. That’s ‘soul sleep’, and the Church does not teach it.
