Hello All,

I need to give some background first. I am American Citizen born to legal residents. I speak both English and Spanish (Soon Latin will follow). I have no loyalty to Mexico whatsoever. I do not refer to myself as a “Mexican-American” or worse “Chicano.” Yes my Ethnicity is Hispanic, but by Nationality is American. I am a born and raised Orthodox Catholic who attends Ave Maria University. With all this in mind a few things must be addressed:

First, looking at this issue from the outside/inside perspective, I am able to say bluntly that there is atremendous amount of Hypocrisy on both sides of this issue.

On one side we have Hispanic Pundits who seem to forget that there are National borders that separate soverign Nations. Individuals who were raised in this country and take advantage of its blessing, yet they constantly harp about the superiority of Latin culture. People who use and abuse the freedom accorded to citizens, yet disgurage integration. All of this is mindless hypocrisy. I reject groups like Mecha and other organizations such as these who promote “Brown Pride” (which is as asinine as White Pride), the illegal traffic of Human beings, and the deprecation of America who, in no uncertain terms, saved Western Civilization. The comical part of all this is that such people elevate Mexican Heritage, yet conveniently ignore that whole Catholic thing. I learned my Faith from my parents and grandmothers. The Church has always been a part of Mexico, to ignore that reaks of discrimination.

On the other side you have an interesting mishmash of people. You have people hopping mad about incoming illegals, yet these people are a hot comodity in the em-ployment feild. Whether nannies, janitors, pickers, cooks, mechanics, or other they are always indemand for their low wages and submissive attitude. “They take American jobs” they scream, though comically most high paying blue collar jobs are being taken by Chinese and Indian slave labor employed by Corporations that subsidize the Republican party. And since these good blue collar jobs are overseas, people have to fight for scraps with illegals. The problem runs both ways. The PRI bankrupted Mexico and the PAN can only do so much to fix the country’s pathetic economy. Many Mexican officials think it is America’s responsibility to employ Mexicans, this is not the case. America has a responsibility for its citizens, of course, our corporations don’t care about America, just profit.

The biggest hypocracy is that we as Catholics view this as a ‘political issue’ at all. I think the only issues here are poverty and need. Niether of these issues could care less about the border. If the situation were reversed Americans would flood Mexico. The only solutions are to either incorperate Mexico into the US or to fix Mexico’s problems to allow prosperity and good living wages.

There those who cry that illegals don’t have rights. This is 100% wrong! All Humans have inherent rights gauranteed to them for being Humans. Catholics especially must defend this truth or our “Pro-Life” aruguments are meaningless. For we say the unborn have rights, how much less does a fully grown person have? Yes illegals who are caught here must be deported. Yes, the U.S. can (and should in my opinion) build a fence on the borders, as well as place the military along it to protect it. But if the illegals are hgere they must be treated with dignity and respect. They cannot be denied emergency care or water (I support groups who give water in the desert). They can be denied employment and social benefits such as welfare, social security, and Medicare. But also, AND VERY IMPORTANTLY, their children CANNOT be denied citizenship if they are born here.

Sorry that may anger some, but that is their problem. I have heard Minute Men say that you cannot be a citizen unless you are born to a citizen, and so citizenship must be taken away from such people. I spit in the face of such a rediculous statement. If they were to get their wish, I would not be a citizen since my parents were not citizens when I was born. Those kinds of people are insane if they think I am giving up my citizenship when I have never, nor would ever live or love Mexico.

Yes the system must make it harder for illegals to get Social services afforded to taxpayers and/or citizens. If they are one, the other, or both, they have a right to demand that which they are entitled. But we must always remember, as Catholics especially, that illegals are humans and have inherent rights. Also, despite what some may deny, racism plays a huge role in this issue. When people talk about removing the citizenship of potentially millions of people, what other word suffices? None in my opinion. This topic is sensitive and combative, but it must always be seen within the context of Catholic Social Justice Teaching and American Constitutionality. You may agree or disagree with what I have said. But this is what a forum is about. :tiphat:

I agree with much of what you wrote, RikasAngel, and I can see how torn and troubled you are about this issue. But, I have to take issue with this statement of yours:

“They take American jobs” they scream, though comically most high paying blue collar jobs are being taken by Chinese and Indian slave labor employed by Corporations that subsidize the Republican party."

I think you have forgotten all about Bill Gates, the head of Microsoft, a HUGE supporter of the Democratic party who also has no qualms about outsourcing jobs overseas, so let’s not get political here with what is truly a human problem of poverty, rights of citizens, and who exactly is being hypocritical. Yes? 🙂

Hello All,

I my statement still stands Della. Remember, the hypocrisy pendulum swings both ways. I purposely pointed the finger at the Republican party because their leadership and “Conservative” pundits are constantly expounding a “Christian” and frankly nativist platform. However, their contributers (or bribers as I see it) commit the sins they atre constantly assailing. As for Gates, he actually takes good care of his employees in the Seattle Facility, plus his Gates foundation has distributed a fair amount of cash across the board. But certainly, the Democrats have their own crimes to answer to. No one’s hand are clean, despite the rhetoric.

Well, Democrats have the “bribers” too, you know. And the issue wasn’t how well Bill Gates treats his employees, but your singling out the Republicans for special ire because of American jobs going overseas. And the Democrats have their share of hypocrites, too–the Clintons come readily to mind!

I agree we live in a flawed system of economics and government, though. If you want read what I believe about such things read G. K. Chesterton’s thoughts on the subject in Outline of Sanity.

:banghead: The truth of the matter is as long as employers and corporations are greedy for the almighty dollar and continue worshiping at the altar of Mamon(ie money) they will continue to out source jobs.Whether white collar technical like to India and Asia,or factory work like garment making to Mexico,Kenya, etc.

Local people and companies will use illegals to do janitorial and other work because they figure they work cheap,etc.etc.And if some small business pays them in cash on payday and can do other things to avoid benefits and paying social security they will continue to do it.
American workers need to wake up .Where are the unions in all this? Time to start a revolution here. Now we have illegals suing Wendy’s and Walmart.Even they are wising up.
Mexico needs to take responsibilty for its poor, not use the US as a dumping ground.
And the Catholic Church in Mexico needs to do more for the people. Whatever happend to liberation theology in Mexico and Central and South America?Maybe it was in someways socialist or marxist, but maybe it tried to help the poor too.
Don’t see where the church is doing much for their own people back home. That is part of why many convert to the protestant faith. They are out there and visit door to do and do other things in these countries. How many of these illegals have a good knowledge of their faith?
I know there are many missionaries and native clergy in Latin Amreica who work hard for the poor, but it seems the church higher ups forget the poor.
Oh it’s all beyond me.If I ruled the world and had complete control of life and death, things would be different.Put most of these politicans in prison.Do alot of stuff for the needy all over the world.
