Hello,

Is it sinful to learn about existentialism? We have to learn a little about it at school (I’m 17. it’s more like a community college before going to university. I don’t live in the USA), and we also have to read a play with existentialist influences or something like that.

If I understand correctly, I’m not sinning, unless the whole situation is an occasion of sin for me? If learning about existentialism doesn’t drive me away from my faith it should be okay? What about the Index of Forbidden books? Is it sinful to read books on this list?

Some advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you

We studied it and lots of other philosophies in seminary.

Given your posting history, it seems that you are scrupulous. You should seek help offline from a priest.

I don’t think the Catholic Church keeps an Index of Forbidden Books anymore.

Thankfully, we’ve evolved past the stage of censoring books.

True…it has not been revised or used since 1966.

And neither does the Church still conclude the unborn go to Limbo, only Catholics can go to heaven, the earth is the center of the universe, or the world is flat.
