I am sorry if this is the wrong place to post this, please move it if it has to be moved.

From what I always understood growing up and from what I have read, even on this particular forum, that when we die, we have a soul that still exists and that soul moves on to be with god to be judged. It’s not a sleep but that we are actually fully aware.

Now, I have heard at times the opposite, that we are asleep until Jesus returns. But recently I saw a video that claims we do not have a soul, and after death we have no conscious, no feeling, nothing, that we cease to exist until Jesus is resurrected and they use the bible to back up their claim.

Can someone at least see this video whenever they have time, and debunk it? It’s about 28 minutes long.

This tract has a part that talks about the immortality of the soul:

4. Do Humans Possess an Immortal Soul?

Another mistake made by JWs is their denial of the immortality of the soul. The Bible mentions the soul approximately 200 times, and it can be seen to have very different meanings according to the context of each passage. This tract will simply demonstrate that the soul is immortal according to Scripture.
Perhaps the strongest contradiction of the WTS doctrine is seen in Christ’s descent to Hades. In 1 Peter 3:19, the apostle tells his audience how Jesus “preached to the spirits in prison.” If the dead were aware of nothing, then his preaching would have been futile. In the OT, the prophet Isaiah speaks of the condition of the dead, "Sheol underneath has become agitated at you in order to meet you on coming in . . . all of them speak up and say. . . . Those seeing you will gaze even at you, saying . . . " (Is. 14:9-11). These verses indicate clearly that the dead are conscious, and the NT tells the same story. To be absent from the body is not to be unconscious, but rather it enables one to be home with the Lord, according to Paul (2 Cor. 5:8, Phil. 1:23). The body is just a tent, or tabernacle that does not last (2 Cor. 5:1-4; 2 Pet. 1:13), while man cannot kill the soul (Matt. 10:28). In fact, the souls live past the death of the bodies, since John "saw . . . the souls of those slaughtered . . . and they cried with a loud voice, saying . . . and they were told . . . " (Rev. 6:9-11). Because the soul does not die with the flesh, those in heaven are able to offer our prayers to God (Rev. 5:8), and live in happiness (Rev. 14:13).

If you don’t mind, I’ll skip the video and try an answer, anyway.

Saint Paul uses a euphemism for dying common to his time, and ours “to fall asleep.” We say that we “put our pets to sleep.”

I have no idea why some people think the Bible was written in English, or that no one ever spoke in the vernacular of their time. Anyway, whole false doctrines are based on the misunderstandings of the language of Scripture.

To answer, refer them to the Gospels. Always.
Mark 9:2-7. After six days Jesus took Peter, James, and John and led them up a high mountain apart by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his clothes became dazzling white, such as no fuller on earth could bleach them. Then Elijah appeared to them along with Moses, and they were conversing with Jesus. Then Peter said to Jesus in reply, “Rabbi, it is good that we are here! Let us make three tents: one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” He hardly knew what to say, they were so terrified. Then a cloud came, casting a shadow over them; then from the cloud came a voice, “This is my beloved Son. Listen to him.”
So Moses and Elijah do not appear to be 'asleep," if they are hanging out with Jesus on a mountaintop.

From Matthew 27:

  • But Jesus cried out again in a loud voice, and gave up his spirit.

x And behold, the veil of the sanctuary was torn in two from top to bottom.* The earth quaked, rocks were split,
    52
tombs were opened, and the bodies of many saints who had fallen asleep were raised.
    53
And coming forth from their tombs after his resurrection, they entered the holy city and appeared to many.

  • The centurion and the men with him who were keeping watch over Jesus feared greatly when they saw the earthquake and all that was happening, and they said, “Truly, this was the Son of God!”
Jesus conquered death. He is risen and we don’t “die,” just our bodies. Didn’t Jesus tell the “good thief” on the cross, “Today you will be with me in Paradise” ?

Did He mean the guy would get a bed to sleep in?

Thank you for the replies!

marty, I didn’ t know it was a video from Jehovah witnesses but it’s good to know that it is because I have heard a lot about those people and from what I understand, they have a lot of misconceptions.
