Immortality only 20 years away says scientist

**Scientist Ray Kurzweil claims humans could become immortal in as little as 20 years’ time through nanotechnology and an increased understanding of how the body works.

The 61-year-old American, who has predicted new technologies arriving before, says our understanding of genes and computer technology is accelerating at an incredible rate. He says theoretically, at the rate our understanding is increasing, nanotechnologies capable of replacing many of our vital organs could be available in 20 years time. Mr Kurzweil adds that although his claims may seem far-fetched, artificial pancreases and neural implants are already available.

Mr Kurzweil calls his theory the Law of Accelerating Returns. Writing in The Sun, Mr Kurzweil said: "I and many other scientists now believe that in around 20 years we will have the means to reprogramme our bodies’ stone-age software so we can halt, then reverse, ageing. Then nanotechnology will let us live for ever.

"Ultimately, nanobots will replace blood cells and do their work thousands of times more effectively.

"Within 25 years we will be able to do an Olympic sprint for 15 minutes without taking a breath, or go scuba-diving for four hours without oxygen.

"Heart-attack victims – who haven’t taken advantage of widely available bionic hearts – will calmly drive to the doctors for a minor operation as their blood bots keep them alive.

"Nanotechnology will extend our mental capacities to such an extent we will be able to write books within minutes.

"If we want to go into virtual-reality mode, nanobots will shut down brain signals and take us wherever we want to go. Virtual sex will become commonplace. And in our daily lives, hologram like figures will pop in our brain to explain what is happening.

“So we can look forward to a world where humans become cyborgs, with artificial limbs and organs.”

Predictions are very unreliable. Remember Bill Gates, who said: “384K memory in a computer will be enough for anything!” and the IBM boss who said: “I can see the need for about 5-6 mainframes across the whole globe” … Haha… and all the predictions which never came to happen. But it sure would be nice to push out our existence a few hundred, maybe a few thousand years. And when we get tired of this existence, we can request to peacefully slip away in our sleep. But it is not going to happen any time soon. (An old joke: “When I go, I want to go like my grandfather… quitely in his sleep. Not like the three other guys in his car, screaming their heads off!”)

And remember the Strudlbrugs in Gulliver’s travels. A long (maybe even eternal) life sure sounds great, as long as it is a youthful, productive, fun existence. But I bet, no one would love to live “forever” if aging would make them cripples, riddled with diseases, constant pain and no relief in sight. Sounds like hell to me.

To what end? If life is simply other humans and the opportunity to exploit the senses, then i would rather have not existed in the first place. Because to me, a life just for the sake of living is insanity.

For fear of death, we seek life. But if that fear was not there, would we really continue living for any of the fleeting and finite pleasures that we seek? I think the greatest deception is the idea that we can be fulfilled as in be “perfectly happy” in this world.

I don’t want to be sugar, i want to taste sugar. I want perfection.

Man, those bloodbots could really change medicine.

We could see a man being wheeled into an ER. the doc crying out “He’s got an infection and it viral, give me 10cc’s of McAfee, STAT!!”

Or pregnant mothers getting shot of VMWare because he’s bloodtype “Win +” and she’s bloodtype “Mac”

There are also Moral Theological implcations as well,

such as if it is permissable for a married couple to use a firewall during the marital act?

I accidentally clicked the wrong bubble!!! How do I change my vote??

The “life” described remind me of the old Zager and Evans song, In the year 2525

I answered “yes” just because I know I really would technically desire it. However, I don’t think it’s a good thing for humanity in general. I think the resulting over population issues would just cause death in other ways from disease, famine, and war.

But I think the science regarding this is still much further off than most people think. It’s like flying cars which were supposed to be here by the year 2000. Wake me when it’s reality I guess 😉

Plus there’s the whole ethical issue that scientists will have to deal with. Also, immortality would probabyl be pretty pricey if it’s not free.

I guess I am officially old, because I know that Bill Gates was supposed to have said 640K is enough for anybody (and it was! - I had just upgraded from 64K to 128K), and the IBM boss was Thomas J. Watson, Sr., which was one of the reasons that T.J. Waston, Jr., took over.

Correct. Looks like I am even older… since I forget things. 🙂

In any case, who will be allowed to stay alive? How would it benefit society even to keep an Einstein alive. He himself would say that his best work was something that he literally grew into, the result of what he learned as he changed from a youth to a man.

Welcome the true insidious end of all mankind. Not by a bang, but a lustful lure.

So far the poll makes the case for Christian hope and joy, don’t you think?

This subject is more of concern to me in the deepest waters of my soul than any other on Earth. It involves many aspects and leads to many extremely dire consequences. The entire revelation of the story would easily constitute a whole new book for the Bible.

What is being discussed in this thread is a subject that entails the most insidious of all efforts of mankind and even to his utter annihilation in total.

But just as the word “insidious” implies, the resolve and hope is not what can be presumptuously obtained. It is not a black or white issue and which is really black or white isn’t even superficially evident.

There is only one path out of this certain demise of all of human kind and I have yet to see any man even thinking about it. No one is truly listening from the very least significant creature on Earth to the highest most brilliant among man and thus the only true hope is unheard.

I am not included in any of the categories listed, so I did not vote (is typical throughout my life). But even if included, to vote in either direction is fatal.

The very thought of the vote even if never presented, is the very demise in action. It instigates a lust into blindness, a presumption to act before complete thought, the very seed of all sin. And this subject cannot go without the most serious thought man has ever encountered.

No matter which side of this issue you stand, by merely standing, you have fallen. Yet men will not go without standing and they even insist and force through cause that all choose, judge, fight, and stand. Yet such is the very nature of lusting in blindness.

It won’t matter who, which religion, which nation, which grouping of any sort addresses this issue and stands on either side. ALL of mankind gets annihilated.

Man truly does not understand God’s will, not on any pedestal, not in any valley, not on any mountain. Yet God’s will is not avoidable, not changeable, and not revealed in the writings of Man.

If by the voting on this thread, Christianity proceeds, the utter annihilation of Christianity is at hand. The only hope would rest in the remaining others but that would be such a minuscule hope as to be beyond desperation.

You cannot merely not vote. You cannot merely ignore the situation. You must do what Man almost never does - learn the real meaning of prayer and learn how to do it right.

He isn’t going to do that and God cannot forgive him for erring on this one.
