So I have been dating a roman catholic for almost four years now.
I have tried to imagine myself going to mass every sunday and becoming more fully
aquainted with the catholic faith. However there are some things that would impede this process. One of those things would have to be the sexual abuse allegations that have continually kept creeping out into the news media.

I grew up protestant. And I keep wondering if one of the reasons why priests or other youth ministers keep getting caught up in these situations are due to the reason that the catholic church does not allow most priests to marry?

If we understand our weaknesses as human beings, it takes someone very special to be able to remain celibate indefinitely.

So obviously the feelings that keep me from rushing over to a catholic church to join would be the " something isn’t right here" kind of feeling.
You think that celibacy can turn normal mentally healthy people into pederasts and pedophiles? Really? You do realize that if this was only about celibacy rules these men could have more easily had sex with adult women instead of abusing children.

The fact that priest are celibate has nothing to do with child molestation. About 5% of adults are child sex abusers and the rate in the catholic church is the same as the general population. Where the Church went wrong was not dismissing the priest and reporting the abuse to the police. That has now been changed and will no longer occur,

In any given social institution, about 3 to 5% are social deviants. No matter how hard you try to prevent such individuals into your social institution, they do get in. And you don’t realize how pathological they are until it is too late.

There was a music teacher at this Catholic grade school whose parishioners were reeling, some with denial as the former priest was ‘orthodox’ who had been accused of behaviors against some school children. I had a bad impression of him. He would sit down with his guitar with 2nd graders, all sitting on the floor and he looked like he was on the same emotional level as they. I looked at him, and he glared right back at me, full of malice. I talked to a mother and she told me others had complained about him but nothing done. And the new pastor was determined not to let anything happen again.

Before the school year ended, the young man was caught in the preliminary steps of abusing a 2nd grader. And there were 40 complaints against him. This was back in 1990. Back then how fast good priests and others serving parishes were pulled so quickly out by the proud and powerful members, but how slow it took to get rid of the bad ones. That was way back then.

Priestly pedophilia is at 1% of the cases. Homosexual behavior with teens is at 4% of the priesthood. American public schools are 100% above the Catholic Church problem.

Blame the media for such distortions. Plus a lawyer is admitting that he sought out victims…another lawyer saying 50% of the cases are looking like false accusations…

The Church is being purged. And then our unity will be restored…but then will come persecutions from the world. So either way you look at it, the Church goes forward with great trevail, but good triumphs over evil and in the bigger picture that regards eternal life, those faithful to the true way the Catholic Church provides will enter eternal life.

From some study, the rate is much lower in the Catholic Church, Chrish.

Priests, like everybody else, have a responsibility to report crime. If he sees or knows one, why not? But it is another matter to force him to break his priestly vow and disclose a penitent’s confession in a confessional because this is religious and spiritual matter. Give to Caesar … .

The Catholic Church isn’t the only place that celibacy is found in spiritual tradition.

*In Hinduism, priests can marry. At the same time, Hindu monks (sanyaasis), who are usually expected to withdraw from samsaara (‘the world’), usually practice celibacy.

The traditions of monasticism within Buddhism require celibacy. *
