hi all…

I have a point that I am wondering about when it comes to Confession…

If a person were to become aware of a sin in his past which he had been an illegal act which he had been arrested for, and had effectively been able to get out of more trouble by lying (I’m not talking about crimes concerning felonies… More like petty criminal activities- breaking windows or something with rocks), and yet he had confessed the sin itself to the priest long ago, felt very sorry for it and renounced ever doing that again and had indeed never returned to those acts is he still guilty of lying and not answering to the secular authorities for like crimes he had concealed…? Keep in mind the duration of the crimes committed and his current state is a matter of years. Years in which he has not returned to those crimes… What do you guys think?

Thanks

I am not sure if this is what you are asking, but let me tell you my understanding. If I am wrong, please tell me. (For the sake of simplifying the explanation, let’s name the person who committed this crime Joe.)

So basically you are saying Joe committed a crime(s), was arrested, but lied to get out of trouble. Joe then confessed committing the crime and lying about it to a priest. If this is the case, Joe is not required to do anything but what the priest asked him to do for penance.

Is this true? Okay. I was just wondering… It might seem like overkill to turn himself in- the crimes in Joe’s case were bad, but I doubt the cops would be too interested after two or so years… but still, I think Joe wouldn’t want to find out… Yes- it sounds like you understand the situation. Thank you… One more thing… If Joe is pretty sure he confessed lying to the cops, but not sure (why would he hold that back- maybe he forgot) is he obligated to mention it now that he seems to remember? Need you confess sins from your past?

If the sin was already confessed, then he does not need to confess it again. However, if he is unsure, he could perhaps mention to the priest, “Father, I am not sure whether or not I mentioned this last time, so I would kike to say it now so that it can be off my conscience.”

Bet yes, if it was not part of the penance, and the priest did not mention for Joe to turn himself in, then I do not believe Joe would obligated to do so.

Well put. That’s what I’d say.

Okay. Thank you for your help. I really appreciate it. God bless.
