As many of you may know, I am a Theatre Performance major in college.

Next semester, I am taking “Directing.” It is the culmination of my two years of training at Broward Community College. I need to cast and direct a one-act play, with anywhere between one and two characters.

I would like to do a “Catholic” play. It can be religious, or just portray a Catholic worldview. I don’t want to do some real cheezy script, though, something obviously meant to proselytize.

Any ideas?

Again, I’ll only be able to cast two or three actors.

Thanks for the suggestion. What a great witness if this could be pulled off!

I don’t know if you are writing the play or asking if we know of something available.

I would say a skit on Chesterton would fill the bill, there is a lot of material in his own words and you could do something like Dale Ahlquist does on EWTN as a monologue or a dialogue.

You could frame it with him having a conversation with his editor, or something like that. Perhaps you could have him reading the London Daily Telegraph and commenting on the news.

He was awesome because he unfurled the Catholic world view to the modern sceptical world in a way that people would listen to him.

Have you considered basing it on the last days of St. Maximillian Kolbe in Aushwitz? You could condense it should be a very moving story.

Hi,

I second this. This is exactly what I was going to suggest!

God bless,

when I was in Catholic high school all schools in the diocese celebrated the Genesian festival, supposedly I guess in honor of a St. Genisius who was patron of theater, don’t remember anything about him. There were competitions in speech, debate, drama, poetry and the culmination was a one-act play presentation. our school won 3 years in a row when my brother participated. he is not on internet and is a hermit so I can’t ask him the name of the plays. but my point is there was a book of one-act plays available for competition use, which I bet is available in libraries of older Catholic high schools, or Catholic colleges. The were not necessarily on “religious” topics but I am sure were chosen to be value-based, certainly no V-monologue stuff.

Pick a play that is commonly regarded as a true work of literature by a Catholic playwright. Do not pick a play that is mediocre but “really” Catholic. Pick something that is artistically good AND carries a truthful message.

There is a person named ( I think) Leonard DiFillipo who has produced several one-act plays, which I believe he also wrote, on people like St. John of God. He’s is sometimes on EWTN. Maybe if you contacted him, he could give you some support?

Peace,
Linda

Do you need to write your own material?

I personally like the approach Tolkien took by weaving catholic themes into works of fiction.

Some catholic themes?
  • The values of the world vs. the values of God
  • How even “little” people can do great things.
  • The nature of unconditional love.
  • The value of self sacrifice
  • The cycle of birth, life, death, and resurrection.
Anyone else have some more?
