At mass this weekend we were reminded
to remain in communion with the Catholic Church,
each of the faithful is obliged to receive Holy Communion at least once a year.
This is to be done between Ash Wednesday (March1st )and Trinity Sunday (June 11), unless for a good reason it is done at another time during the year.

What is reccomended for family members who have
interest in coming back after say three years away from the Church ? A general confession ?Talk with the priest?
Thanks and God bless.

Actually, we are required to go to confession (if we have grave sins to confess) and receive communion at least once a year during the Easter season… which means Easter Sunday through Pentecost, no?

What is recommended for people not practicing their faith depends on the people involved. Have they expressed an interest in returning to the Church? Then by all means encourage them! Invite them to go to Mass with you, answer their questions, support them in any way you can, pray for them.

On the other hand, if they haven’t expressed an interest, the situation is different. Pray for them. Be open to their questions or concerns about the Church. Invite them to Mass if you think they would appreciate the invitation. But don’t be overly pushy and don’t act judgmental about their situation.

In either case, assist the Holy Spirit but don’t get in the way.

A general Confession would be fine. Talking to a priest is always good but it is not a must.

In the US and other parts of the world, Lent has been incorporated into the time period specified by the requirements (with proper approvals received from the Vatican).

Thanks for your replies 🙂 This is only for someone who has expressed interest.

That makes it much easier! God is already moving in their lives and they’re responding to him. I’d suggest inviting the person to Mass or to other activities that might be happening in your parish. Meeting people and feeling comfortable can be helpful. And when they’re ready, reconciliation will allow them to get back into the sacramental life of the Church.
