The many Old Testament wars where God aske for the total destruction of life and property seem to be a point that many find difficult to accept - and uses it to undermine their faith in the inerrancy of Scrpiture .

Well - couple of points ; take our modern ’ mad cow disease ’ where one or two cows can come down with the disaese and called for total destruction of the herds , since they too could be carriers .
Now let us move on to something more sinister - satanic possesion …
Many might be familiar with an internet 'story’about this evil mummy that was the cause of death and destruction wherever it happened to be …( supposedly all true incidents ) and finally was enroute to U.S on the Titanic …
Well , that story, can be a powerful tool to bring out so much ( see , how The Lord uses evil, for good !) 👍
If a dead mummy still could have such power of evil with it , even in our times ( when we can avail His Power , The Protection of The Precious Blood …Our Lady …Miraculous Medal ) , imagine what it must have been like in those days …

The role of Israel must have been to be holy enough, to face these powers … and total warfare makes sense , esp. when Israel , through their own sin and weakness , could not dwell with the pagan nations ( who might have been into all sorts of evil from possible satanic slavery ) , to be a good role model and ? exorciser .
We come to Saul and his disobedaince - there again, suppose those animals too were objects of possession … Saul, by having been disobediant to the Lord and choosing not to be under His protection, could have unleashed the evil powers ,into whoever they chose to go ( unlike in the exorcism of the Gerasene demoniac and the serene , quiet strength of The Lord with wisdom and compassion )and many many such instances …
Now , even death in war might have been Mercy for these people - if they were always into child sacrifice, adultery, hatred, human sacrifice and who knows what else…

Should make us have more reverence for relics, holy and blessed objects , in getting houses blessed and of course power of Sacraments … calling on The Holy Spirit …and being glad of the power The Lord has given His mother - the rosary …staying away from horoscopes etc: :o

Please forgive me but could you clarify what you are trying to say or ask. I didn’t understand your post or its point.

Apologies …
Trying to make sense out of what many call unreasonable - the God ordained wars of Old Testament ; that they do not have to portray a cruel Israel …or worse ( since many use it to say A Good God could not have 'asked ’ for those wars of total destruction )

Times probably were different then - esp. may be in the reality of satanic powers and possession …
Total warfare might have been the only way - esp. after the sinful failures of Israel…who themselves might have been overcome by those powers …

The OT is a journey partaken by the Israelite nation to find God. Things that seem inconsistent with NT theology merely represent a misunderstanding among the Jews of the time. God, being immutable, was the same in the OT as the NT.

THE INTERPRETATION OF THE BIBLE IN THE CHURCH

The above link is a Pontifical Biblical Commission documnet issued by the Church in 1994. It is useful but is also VERY long. If you choose to look at it, pay special attention to the Historical-Critical method. Keep in mind that Catholics may view the Scripture in any of the ways described in the document, but I find that the Historical-Critical method answers a lot of my questions.

Thanks Aaron - like the site , glimpsed at it - and hope to be able to look through later …
Agree God is immutable - but we as people, cultures ,times are diffrent …
Even in the NT - the Lord talks about the unfaithful servants being killed off …beign thrown in prison …about the warning 'unless you all repent , something worse can happen ’

If the percieved inconsistency might be -if God could actually have asked Israel to kill off seemingly peaceful people living around them - may be those people were not all that peaceful…

This may not be for every war in Israel’s history…

In our own times , The Bl. Mother had warned us in Fatema that ww1 was judgement for breaking sabbath ( and true when persons become too materialistc, we make someone else our master, who then influences hearts into all sorts of evil) and she had warned - 'if the world does not repent …" we had ww11 and all the evils of communism …not very difrent from OT times …
True ,in our world with The Power of Word and the Holy Spirit , we should be able to avoid these and in many ways we do see the good …in many hearts and cultures … Thy Kingdom Come !
