First of all, I do apologise if this thread is in the wrong forum (I thought that since the quote pertains to lust, it might fit in here), so please move it if it is.

Does anyone recognise this quote? “We stand up to the devil in all things, except lust; in lust, we run away.”

That wording is probably slightly incorrect, and I’m not sure who said it, possibly St Augustine. It would be really helpful if someone could identify this quote for me.

Thanks.

I’ll have to look for who said it, but I’ve read something like it before. It pertains to our strategy against temptation, I think. We are to face and confront most temptations head-on, but where lust is concerned, the best strategy is to change the circumstances - run away, as it were, from whatever (or whoever) is tempting us to lust. Something like that.

I’m looking for it. Maybe in St. Augustine. I’ll try to get back to you. God bless. Keep the faith.

That almost sounds something like St. Francis of Assisi would say.

I also think that Catholics shouldn’t look at it as “fighting the devil” but rather a “fight to keep the faith.” Fighting the devil we might think too much about the sin involved, but in looking at it as a “fight to keep the faith” we turn more to Christ.

This also reminds me of when Joseph was tempted by Potifar’s wife in the Old Testament and he simply fled.
