Grammatically speaking, the pronoun “this” rock (the second rock) - always refers to the nearest noun which is the first rock in verse 18, as opposed to Simon’s confession in verse 17, as you know - correct? My cousin is an English teacher so be honest. LOL…LOL…I believe the “rock” in verse 18, refers to verse 17: " …for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven." which is referring to verse 16: “Thou art the Christ, the son of the living God.”.
The statement of “That thou art Peter” is a way that Jesus identified Peter as the next leader of the church through which the rock of revelation from the rock of our Lord would come through.
Verse 17: Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven.
Verse 18: And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church…
