I am takeing R.C.I.A. classes starting this september to become catholic. Do the classes tell me eavrything I will need to know, or will it be something that will get me by and give me the know how to further learning (sort of like a foundation)? The reason I ask is that I seem to have this nack for attrackting eavry person that Hates the Catholic Church and could come up with some “Good reasons” why (evan though what they are saying is B.S.). Thank You and God bless.

When I went through RCIA, I thought it gave me a good base on what I should know. Though, what it seems like your in need of a good apologist or apologitic materials to help you with those people. Most RCIA programs are not really about defending the faith, especially after you get past inquiry, and the program mostly becomes about growing into the faith and exploring the mystery of the sacraments.

Hi Montie,

RCIA should tell you everything you need to become a Catholic. It won’ t teach you everything there is to know. I have been a Catholic for 72 years and I’m still learning.

I don’t think you should become an apologist soon. Just tell people, “I’m learning about the Catholic Church, and when I hear about _____, you’ll be the first to know.”

I agree with your advise to Montie. It is difficult for a well-grounded and informed Catholic to be an apologist–in some sense it is a gift!

Sadly no, but they should lay a good foundation. It’s up to you to work the rest out (boy does that sound like an old protestant). Find a good priest or catholic friend. You know I was in the same boat two years ago I started to read Scott Hahn’s ( Prof. Theol. Fransciscan U.) books and then eventually came here. BUT One thing ask questions at RCIA, heart felt, challenge the priest/deacon/leaders its good for you and them.Everybody learns. AND they will remember you - which helped me to become a lector

Hopefully your sponser will be able to help you with this. I was really lucky when I was in RCIA with this.

RCIA is just a scratch on the surface. Becoming Catholic is a life long learning process.

I would fully agree with this. Also, I would say from the training I received to work with RCIA that the conversion of the heart is as important in the process as the knowledge you gain. You certainly have to know what it is you’re joining, but if it doesn’t change your heart in the process it won’t stay with you and will end up being like an altar call.

My prayers are with you and all who seek to know the Church.

Peace,

I have found that the questions I’ve been asked over the years have led to a much richer understanding of the Faith on my part over the years. The next time you’re attacked or even approached with questions / concerns about the church you may want to consider doing the following. 1) Say a quick and private prayer that the Holy Spirit will be with you in whatever you say or do in response. 2) Answer the question as directly and charitably as you can and 3) Don’t be afraid of not having an answer. If you don’t know, admit you don’t know but that you’d like to get back to them when you do know. 4) Research and get back to them. You can always come here with the questions you have.

The one thing that is wonderful about being Catholic is that the Church was founded by Christ and rests on the fullness of His Truth. As such, you can rest assured that the answers will only lead you to a deeper appreciation of all that the Church is.

There have been some rough times in our Church history. It’s been 2000 years of an association of people and there have been sinners in our midst. But the truths taught on the subjects of Faith and Morals, as given to us by the Pope and the Magesterium, have been forever faithful to Christ. Of this, we can be certain.

God Bless you as you move forward towards what I pray will be a happy conversion. And who knows, perhaps you are being called to train to be an apologist as well.

Well, why do you think they call us practicing Catholics? It takes lots of practice!😉

From what I’ve seen of people who convert, having had the privilege of being a cradle Catholic of sorts (Mom finally won over Dad when he was in his anti-Catholic mode and had us all baptized when I was five), the minute they make the choice, the evil one tries to throw things in their path to talk 'em out of it. In this case, it’s people that are being thrown.

Hang in there. Pray, get a sponsor as soon as possible, keep up things on the boards here. And let us hear fro you around Easter Vigil time!

I am taking private instructions from the priest, and seem to get all those people too. That is their pride. Don’t listen to them too whole heartedly…don’t cast your pearls before swine, as my dad told me.

Understand that God may send you to these people for evangelization, or the devil may send them to dissuade you. Your only option is to follow that previous advice: be direct and honest. Don’t compromise. Read your catechism. Don’t argue. Your pride will be hurt by their accusations. Turn the other cheek. Or, as the disciples asked, “Should we call down fire upon them?” Do as Jesus does…he says, “No…” And goes to another town.

There are many who will want to “talk” with you about Catholicism. This means that that they want to tell you why they hate it, and call you a wacko when you respond, roll their eyes, and not listen. I’ll repeat: don’t cast your pearls before swine lest they tear you to pieces.

God bless. Be faithful. Pray for help.

Aaron
