In this Jim Carrey movie I see what seems to be an inverted cross next to Our Lady

I thought this was rather creepy as I’ve heard about subtle satanic references in Hollywood. What do you think?

What movie is this? When in the movie was this? What was the context? It’s hard to give a response without knowing these things, or at least seeing a clip.

I concur with Bithynian that it does look like a weird clock. I suppose it’s possible it’s a clock that’s supposed to be in an upside-down cross, but without context I cannot evaluate that.

It is one of those weirdly designed wall clocks from either the 60’s or 70’s. Looks like 3:30 or so. (Might be 6:18 too. Who designs a clock that is strange to read anyway?)

Looks like Brazilian architecture from the 1950s.

Doesn’t seem like it, but I wouldn’t be surprised. What’s the context of the scene?

Let us remember the true meaning of the upside-down cross, martyrdom of Peter the Apostle. (Though I understand you believe it meant in the modern ant-christian way)

It is a very common mid century designed clock.

Anyway, St Peter was crucified upside down. Nothing wrong with an upside down cross

Yeah that’s a clock, not a cross.

Also fun fact: the inverted cross is the Cross of Saint Peter. Because he was crucified upside down. It’s an ancient and revered symbol of Christian iconography.

Yeah I know now, but I still think it’s odd that it’s at that position , and regardless of it’s Petrine nature it’s still used as a way to mock Christians, and Hollywood loves doing that. Idk.

Perhaps. Maybe I’m like the lady on YouTube who argued why Monster Energy drinks are satanic. 😀

I chugged them in middle school ten years ago. I’m surprised I don’t have some kind of health issue from it. They taste like toxic acid filled with sugar

Even though it is a clock, and assuming the clock is not supposed to suggest an upside down cross, why is the Blessed Virgin Mary part of the scene? I didn’t see the movie. I remember a movie where a momentary view of a monstrance was used for ironic “humor” (long time ago; if I had to guess it was in “Being John Malkovich”). I hope the Blessed Virgin wasn’t used for irony in this case.

There’s no relation to the plot, it’s simply a drapery that is hanging in this character’s apartment. No verbal references to it or anything.

The character seems Latino, but I could be wrong. And if I’m not mistaken that is Our Lady Of Guadalupe which based in Latin America

I doubt it.

After all, it’s not even particularly for the time period, just garden-variety ugly . . .

We’ve established that it’s a clock. Let’s set that aside.

Is the character religious? You can be absolutely sure that such a large image in the scene, that of the Blessed Virgin, was not accidental. If the character, or the character to whom the Guadalupe belongs to, is not religious, then IMO using it is problematic.

The character is only in one scene and so it doesn’t go into whether he’s religious or not:
