… would it be likely for a Monk to become Pope? I think there is only one Cardinal who is a Monk presently, the ArchBishop of Boston. I know there were past Popes who belonged to Religious Orders, notably St. Pius V, but what about today? Can a Monk reach to high levels in today’s Church?

The way you worded the question, it is possible for anyone to become Pope. Maybe the question should be how likely?

It would seem that any candidate for the papacy would have to be well known amongst the cardinals. This could likely happen by a couple of the cardinals knowing a certain monk then spreading the word about him. Or perhaps during the election a dove flies into the room and whispers a name into the cardinals’ ears.
