Now I’ve heard it all. The music director at my old parish is planning a pre-Mass concert for Christmas. Wonderful. Most churches do it. But his choice of music is totally inappropriate for church. He is going to have the choir sing ‘Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer’, ‘Jingle Bell Rock’, and ‘Feliz Navidad’. If I hadn’t already quit his choir, this would surely make me do it now. My brother says write a letter to the Bishop. What do you all think?

I think you’re sticking your nose where it doesn’t belong. If it is, indeed, your old parish then mind your own business. Do you want members of other parishes complaining to the bishop how your parish is so orthodox?

Timidity, I think you misunderstood. It is my OLD parish, true, and mostly because of this music director and I have no intention of writing to the bishop. That was my brother’s suggestion. I just wondered what you thought of his music selections. And thanks for chewing me out so early in the morning. Merry Christmas to you.I don’t really have a parish anymore. I attend the Tridentine Mass and we rent space from another church. We are not yet considered a parish.

Gee, Timidity, you don’t come across as timid at all. That has to be one of the bluntest, most direct, and opinionated posts you could have come up with. :tsktsk: If you couldn’t have found a nicer way to say it, maybe you shouldn’t have posted at all. Merry Christmas to you too.

Cestus would issue an immediate fatwah against secular music before Midnight Mass.

Do you want members of this forum thinking you are a jerk for being so rude to a person who just wanted some friendly advice?

I wasn’t rude. I was amazingly blunt. And she wasn’t looking for advice, she was looking for opinions, so I gave her mine.

Ah, but the opinion I wanted was about the choice of music, which you didn’t give. And yes, you were amazingly blunt. Your answer actually hurt my feelings and I was only here for a little Christmas Eve conversation. But I understand you can’t see through a keyboard to see my emotions. Only thing wrong with computer conversations. I sincerely hope you have a Merry Christmas.http://forums.catholic-questions.org/images/icons/icon7.gif

Moira, Merry Christmas 🙂 I attended Carols before Mass last night and it was lovely. All the carols were religious and before each one our pastoral associate read either a quote from the bible or a meditation which led into the next carol. A couple of years ago when our PP was new to the parish he permitted the "on the lawn carols’ be held in the church because the weather was inclement. This decision caused uproar in the parish once the news got around what had happened e.g. a rock band in the sanctuary. Feedback led him to state that in future if carols can’t be held on the lawn they will be held in the hall.

One of our curates is an Anglican convert and he has reintroduced incense to the Mass; not all of them just on the big feast days. Our youth Mass, which he said, was beautifully reverent and should, I think, have been videoed and sent around the parishes to show others that it is possible to have a Youth Mass without ‘dumbing down’ the Mass and patronising the congregation. For some of the young people attending it was the first time they had seen/smelt incensing.

Although I deplore secular music in church I tend to agree with the comment that if it is your former parish you can’t do much about it. The feedback has to come from the parishioners. Hopefully, enough of them will be correctly formed and they will discuss the matter with the PP in charity.

I think that if I were a bishop I’d dread having to open my mail in the morning.

That sounds like a great way to introduce carols! We had a spiritual concert once with a lot of good gospel music and each song was introduced by telling about the slaves and how the song came into being.

I didn’t expect to do anything about their music; I just thought it was a bad choice for Christmas Mass.I am still friends with several people from my old parish and they keep me informed on what is going on. You see, I left that parish partly because of this music director and I wasn’t alone. Our choir went from 27 members at Easter to about 9 members now. But I belonged to that parish for about 17 years and I guess it’s kind of hard to let go. Although I think it happened for a reason because now I’m in a different choir that I love.

And I, like you, deplore secular music in church. A Merry and Blessed Christmas to you!

Moira, merry Christmas and happy St. Stephen;s day, TIVOed every Christmas concert I could find on TV to enjoy during the 12 days of Christmas, since media will stop caroling today. EWTN from CAtholic University of America was outstanding. We are going to spend New Years in Corpus Christi and attend Cathedral concert which is always beautiful. In our parish we just sing carols (carols are specific Christmas songs with theological content anouncing the good news, so secular songs are not technically carols). Youth group went caroling at nursing home, played bingo with residents and gave out prizes and favors made by elementary CCD kids. they also gave out Christmas cookies after every Mass on Christmas eve (6, 8, 10 (Spanish) and Midnite. altogether a lovely Christmas. today we are headed to the Basilica of Our Lady of San Juan del Valle for mariachi Mass.

I guess I will be the only person that doesn’t have e major problem with this selection. Rudolph and Jingle Bell Rock is mor than I would ever try, but I do not have a problem with the Feliz Navidad and We Wish You a Merry Christmas outside of the Mass. Since these songs occured prior to Mass, I would be inclined to let the local priest and music director do what they think best.
