Hey everyone,

I understand that even before the remission of excommunication it was acceptable to go to SSPX parishes if one was doing so to attend the Tridentine Mass and not to be in schism. However I have heard many priests and knowledgable laymen say that it is unacceptable to attend a Independent chapel. I have never really gotten a clear explanation though. I dont understand why, if the chapel is not Sedevacantist and prays for Pope Benedict and one is going simply to attend the Tridentine Mass (or say in my case, receive Confession or other Sacraments in the Traditional form since there are diocesan parishes which say the 1962 Mass, but no way to receive the other Traditional Sacraments)

Any clarification appreciated!
God Bless!

I think most independent chapels are sedevacantist. For those that are not, I would think that one ought to treat them the same way one treats SSPX chapels. Please note, however, that unlike most other sacraments, the sacrament of confession requires an authorized priest for validity. A priest operating independently is not authorized to administer this sacrament. So, while you might attend mass at one of these chapels, I would not go there for confesson.

Frankly, I wouldn’t go to one of them for any reason under the sun. The bulk of them are sede groups, and the rest seem to be just plain nuts. If they’re not sedes in the first place, why would they be “independent” churches unless they have very serious problems?

I’ve seen a variety of websites run by some of these so-called “independent” churches, and they made my skin crawl. From what I’ve seen, it seems to me they’re worse than sedes: at least the sedes can (usually, at least) claim Apostolic succession. The bishops of so many of these “independent” groups are often of dubious validity.

There’s one that I recall that was a “multi-ritual independent” church. The details escape me at the moment, but it was some sort of outfit that used “TLM” (pre-1962, of course) , Byzantine, Maronite, and Coptic. (I assume at different times.) What a joke.

Steer clear.
