I see there is a special prayer to pray on the 1st January. Is this what would normally be the rosary or 30 minutes of the bible? Also what does publicly mean, does that mean in the church or do I have to pray it out loud?

Good explanation here -
Fr Zs New Years Plenary Indulgences Alert!

New Years Eve - Te Deum a plenary indulgence is granted if the hymn is recited publicly on the last day of the year. Not in private, but in public and usually with others - at Mass is perfect!

New Years Day - Veni, Creator Spiritus A plenary indulgence is granted if it is recited on January 1st or on the feast of Pentecost.
Edited post:-
(no mention of it being recited publicly, so in my opinion it’d be ok to recite (aloud) by yourself or with others as the occasion may be). ← according to my manual this part isn’t correct as it states this hymn is to be recited publicly.

The recitation of the Te Deum and the recitation of the Veni Creator have the same conditions as they are both covered in the same part of section 26 of the Manual of Indulgences. It’s always better to rely on the Manual than on any web page.

Both of them just say “Devoutly assist at the recitation or solemn singing of” the prayer. Neither one uses the word “publicly” at this time. However, the old manual from 1968 required that they be recited publicly. I think just saying them out loud in church should work in any event.

Thanks Tis for pointing out #26 in the Norms for Indulgences. My book states “To gain indulgences it suffices to recite the prayer alternating with another person or to follow it mentally as another recites it.” Thus being two people reciting it and not just “you” (a general ‘you’) reciting it yourself out loud (as was asked in the OP), and hence why I stated “Not in private, but in public and usually with others - at Mass is perfect!”

I just thought being at Mass, therefore usually others are present with which to recite or mentally follow would be the most easiest way for the majority of people to fulfill this part.

And yes, I can get a little lazy and rely on trustworthy online sources instead of checking out my own Handbook of Indulgences, Norms and Grants.

But now having done that, in my manual it does actually say for both - “The indulgence will be a plenary one if this hymn is publicly recited …”.

Veni, Creator

So my manual of indulgences is different to the websites I linked to regarding the Veni, Creator, as we can see my Handbook states it is to be recited publicly too. This manual was printed in 1991 and has the decree of the Apostolic Penitentiary dated 8 November 1988. 🤷‍♀️

The latest update is I believe from 1999. That’s the one we keep linking to on the forum. The editions after 1968 and prior to 1999 have some wording and numbering differences, and also are missing some of the more recently added indulgences.

ok, that’s good info to have because I assumed I had the current edition.

Thank you again, Tis.
