Indeed, a love we ourselves can even, in turn, come to emulate by His grace.
Like a lover who finds it painful to be separated from their partner , so much more does God wish to embrace those in Purgatory who are longing for Him.
If purgatory is a place where we are supposed to be purified and get rid of our earthly habits, then why do we get indulgences to spend less time there?
Our earthly habits are former things, because our earthly existence is a former thing for souls in the state of Purgatory - although there can still be some relationship (according to who is speculating) . Purgatory is where we atone for sins committed, not gradually somehow stop sinning.
Agreeing with the sentiment in the previous post, I think should we ever end up in Purgatory , it would become (if you pardon the expression)
painfully obvious why we would wish to have the benefit of indulgences .
Moreover, the gaining of indulgences and the offering of them on behalf of the holy souls in Purgatory is a charitable act - the selflessness of which is highly commendable, finding its completion in the Communion of Saints, and enabling us to share in Christ’s own redemptive power.
Although, as Father John Hardon, S.J. writes , the pains of the souls in Purgatory are not “incompatible with great peace and joy, since the poor souls deeply love God and are sure they will reach heaven” , the suffering the holy souls endure is extremely real (something we might correctly call pure suffering, in the sense that there are no distractions and the object is clear) . According to the Diary of St. Faustina , their greatest suffering is their longing for God.
I found
this paper to be helpful in contemplating Purgatory , in that it draws from many different sources within Church tradition.
Another inspirational passage (also from the
Diary of St. Faustina 1226] ) contains our Blessed Lord’s (
purported, if you prefer) words :
“Today bring to Me the souls who are in the prison of Purgatory, and immerse them in the abyss of My mercy. Let the torrents of My Blood cool down their scorching flames. All these souls are greatly loved by Me. They are making retribution to My justice. It is in your power to bring them relief. Draw all the indulgences from the treasury of My Church and offer them on their behalf. Oh, if you only knew the torments they suffer, you would continually offer for them the alms of the spirit and pay off their debt to My justice.”
One of the benefits of gaining indulgences for the holy souls is that we gain new intercessors in Heaven who will be forever grateful to us and who intercede for us.
