Hello friends,
My question is this:
If the Church has the power to reduce temporal punishment, apparently allocating the ‘stored up’ merits of the saints and loosing them as they see fit on people who participate in certain acts of faith & charity, etc… Then doesn’t this render purgatory unnecessary?

- The Churches power comes from Christ
- The power to grant indulgences comes from Christ
- Indulgences instantly lessen temporal punishment
- Therefore Christ can instantly lessen temporal punishment
- Christ’s merits are endless and sufficient for every stain of sin
- Therefore, all our temporal punishment can be instantly removed by Christ’s merits assigned to us.
- This is, essentially, why protestants see no need for purgatory & why, at least theoretically, purgatory is not necessary.
