Do all Indult Masses follow the rubrics for the 1962 Roman Missal, or do some follow earlier missals such as the 1955 Roman Missal. Also how different would those two masses be?

*Ecclesia Dei *specifically mentions the 1962 Missal, but it also mentions previous liturgical forms in general in another part. I imagine it would be up to the Bishop’s discretion.

The only change to the ordinary of the Mass would be in the Communicantes prayer, where the name of St. Joseph was added by Pope John XXIII. Maybe the second confiteor before communion was removed too. There were changes in the Holy Week in 1955, don’t know if your missal reflects that.

There is no discretion. The actual indult was given in the letter Quattuor abhinc annos in 1984 and it indicates the TLM must be according to the 1962 missal. This letter contains “the directives already issued some time ago” referred to by Pope John Paul II in Ecclesia Dei.

The Institute of Christ the King in Europe uses the '55 Missal, but I think follow the 1962 calander. As far as I know in America they use all 1962. But even here they still say St.Josephs name in the Canon.

The Ecclesia Dei commission hasn’t followed John Paul II’s directives anyway. They give permission for priests to use the Novus Ordo lectionary, chant parts of the Canon, say the prayers at the foot of the altar to the side like in the Novus Ordo, ommit last Gospel etc., I realy don’t think they’d care if some one wanted to use an older Missal.

I think most of those are actually 1965 era rather than NO- the chanting of “Per omnia saecula” in the Canon, omission of the Last Gospel, vernacular readings, singing the blessing by a priest, etc. I think the prayers at the foot of the altar still have to be said there, but after the kissing of the altar it may be done at the chair (also 1965)

Th only thing I thought they allowed from the NO was the Latin orations for saints canonised since then and the new prefaces issued in 1969. Where have they allowed the NO lectionery?

Yes, it is 1965 but I always looked at it as a step towards the Novus Ordo. As for NO Lectionary, apolagies I’m mistaken…I meant to mention the new Prefaces. My point was the Commision dosn’t stick to John Paul II’s directives…so whats the harm in using the pre 1962 rubrics.
God Bless,
Kieran
