So a doctrine is not declared infallible unless it has been declared infallible? We need a canon law to tell us that???
the word is “defined”.

Yes someone should not teach that X was “defined” when it was not…

(we of course also have canons regarding not teaching contrary to the Faith…even though that is of course should be self-explanitory…it still needs to be there for the order of the society of the Church)

Something can be infallible without that kind of definition.

See the CDF commentary on the Professio

(And yes we need all sorts canons…)

Any problems I have with certain Church teachings I believe really come back to the question of infallibility and Church authority. I think if I could resolve this issue for myself then everything else would basically fall into place.

Here are a few concerns I have: people always use the statement that Christ said He would not leave us orphans as a promise of infallibility. I don’t see this AT ALL.

People also use the statement of Christ that He would guide us into all truth as proof of infallibility. There is a difference between being guided into truth and possessing the infallible truth about all faith and morals at any given time.

I don’t see anything specific about infallibility anywhere in scripture, and the Church itself didn’t even broach the subject until quite recently, which seems sort of “convenient” to me.
.
well I don’t think the Church claims to consciously possess the fulness of Truth at any given time. certainly the Pope doesn’t claim that. nor any individual Catholic on earth.

that is why it is a matter of faith. but we must know enough to stay on the right track–i.e. infallibility

and the Church has always recognized infallibilty I think. the Church must be infallible since it is the fulness of Jesus CHrist Eph 1:22,23

the Church must be infallible in some way so that people can know the Truth, which is what Jesus came to give us: Himself, the Truth
