Information on Extraordinary Form for "beginner"

Hey all,

So our priest has added an EF Mass to the Sunday schedule, and since he wanted the first one to be a Missa Cantata (Sung Mass), he put me in charge of the music. I advertised the Mass on facebook to spread the word and in the process got a lot of questions from people.

So I wanted to get opinions/suggestions on not only some good resources for these people - most of whom have never ever heard of the EF Mass or did not know that, though it changed slowly over the years, it was the Mass of the Roman Rite for many centuries - but also to see if any of you know where I can find a relatively simple, and relatively concise explanation of the EF Mass, and how it differs from the OF Mass.

I know of some resources myself and even know how to answer these questions, but am not the best, speaker, shall we say, and wanted to see what other (name removed by moderator)ut I could get on here so that I can direct them to some good sources. Thank you all in advance!

First let me congratulate you for getting an EF on your Sunday schedule. I bet that wasn’t easy.

Second, what you’re probably looking for is a crash course on the Latin Mass, the text, the rubrics, etc. Among the many tapes I have on the Mass, the one I consider the best is “The Most Beautiful Thing This Side of Heaven.” Of course, you’ll never be able to get this tape on time, even if it’s still available. Next best thing I suppose is youtube. I’m sure there are others here who can provide you with more specifics.

BTW, you don’t need to compare forms, although I think it’s important to know the difference between Low Mass vs High Mass, language, and things of that nature. The Latin Mass Society has some valuable articles on contemplative prayer among other things.

Not easy practically, since this priest has two parishes and already says a Saturday evening Mass and three other Sunday Masses; but otherwise easy, since he is a wonderful priest who loves the EF as I do, and I am more than willing to do anything I can to help spread that love.

I suppose that is correct as you said - a crash course on the Mass, text, rubrics, etc. I will have to look into that tape. By “tape” do you mean a video tape or an audio tape? Or something else? Anyway, thank you for the suggestion.

The reason I included that in my bolded part in the OP is because that was an exact question that I got from someone. Frankly I don’t see the issue with that since they most certainly (and validly) are different experiences; in any case, you’re right, they were also not familiar with the Low/High Mass terms etc. I will also check out Latin Mass Society - thanks!

I have a copy of the “Latin-English Booklet Missal for praying the Traditional Mass” published by the Coalition In Support Of Ecclesia Dei, Second Edition, July 1994, Fifth Printing. Perhaps you could find this on the internet. Not sure if this is exactly what you are looking for.

Yeah not sure what the problem is in comparing the two forms. Perfectly valid especially when you are introducing one in an established environment. It’s only natural that there will be comparisons.

Hope all goes well. Maybe you could get that book I suggested, hold an introductory class and just read from the book.
