Ms Betancourt and several others were rescued from hostage captivity after many years.

Ms Betancourt, a beautiful and devout Catholic lady, is quoted by the NY Times today as crediting her Catholic faith and the Blessed Virgin Mary for the miracle of her survival and rescue.

She is now back home in France where all French eyes are on her, as she speaks of her faith and how it kept her alive during her ordeal. Pope Benedict has invited her to come to Rome to meet him.

What a wonderful witness of Catholic faith to France, and Europe at large.

She and the other 14 hostages rescued this week were some of the approximately 700 hostages held by guerilla factions in Colombia. The main guerilla organization (FARC) used to be mostly politically motivated (socialist) but then got into drugs and other petty criminal activity. The hostages are primarily held for ransom but occasionally the FARC will try to negotiate for trades involving FARC members held in Colombian jails. Ingrid Betancourt was often touted as one of FARC’s best “bargaining chips”.

Three of the 15 hostages rescued this week were Americans.
 
it is a very interesting story. There was no bloodshed during the rescue.

When I first saw Ms Betancourt on tv she was making the sign of the cross, and i could see what seemed to be a small wooden rosary on one of here wrists. Then there is the story currently on the NY Times web site about her homecoming to France, being greeting by Pres. Sarkozy, her comments about the Faith, the Rosary, the Blessed Mother, and her invitation from the Holy Father, it really caught my attention.

President Uribe of Colombia is rumored to be a Opus Dei member and has been reelected twice and is going for the third time.
He had 80% approval ratings before the rescue. 👍
 
I can really identify with her story. :console:

Perhaps someday I can tell something about my own without people laughing and saying that I lie. After all, such things don’t happen in the U.S. 😦
 
And I don’t think it’s a coincidence that the release happened within days of the Pope’s prayers:

"Pope Benedict XVI joined Colombia’s bishops in their call for an end to the violence, kidnappings and extortion plaguing the country.

‘I fervently pray to God that these situations which have caused so much suffering end as soon as possible and that a stable and just peace may reign in Colombia in an atmosphere of hope and well-being,’ he said in a video message to Colombia’s bishops.

The video message, played July 1, was sent to the bishops attending the 85th plenary assembly of the Colombian bishops’ conference in Bogota, Colombia."
