My therapist suggested that I try inner child therapy. I am unsure if it is proper for a Catholic to engage in this type of therapy, or whether it is condoned by the Church. I was wondering if anyone knew if it was safe to engage in this. Your insight would be greatly appreciated.

As far as I know, it’s morally neutral.
It’s based on the idea that our neuroses today have their basis in not getting our emotional needs met as a child.
Whether or not that theory is correct, or partially correct, I can’t say.

There are many different approaches and many different theories in psychology and most seem to be usefully describe various groups of people at various times and can be useful therapies to various people of various kinds. Eclectic is the key word.

Why not try this therapy if it has been suggested that you in particular would benefit from it. You’ll probably know if it feels right for you fairly soon. The only thing is that I believe some therapies can stir up long forgotten memories and emotions which could be uncomfortable to revisit but presumably whoever is recommending this for you is qualified to do so.

Naturally we should ask God for His help in these matters too.

In a military class on “getting in touch with your feelings” I told the presenter that my “inner child” is dead and buried in my back yard because I am now in touch with my inner and outer adult. She was not amused… This is what the reign of “intuitive feelers” tried to do to the military- eviscerate it!
