Innocent III and the Crusades?

Did Pope Innocent III ever excommunicate the Crusaders for what they did during the 4th Crusade whenever they attacked, raided, and pillaged Constantinople?

You know I’ve looked for this same thing and the “witch” hunts that went on under Innocent VIII. It seem a written absolution of the church by a pope was found at one time forgiving the crusaders and the church for sins in the past. I can’t remember if the incident your referring to is what the absolution was for but there was one found. A priest told me this once.

According to the Wiki article on Innocent III, “The pope excommunicated the Crusaders who attacked Christian cities, but was unable to halt or overturn their actions.” Footnotes refer to an article from the New World Encyclopedia and an article on the site “Who’s Who in Medieval History and the Renaissance,” so get your salt-shakers out.

Edit: The Britannica article on Innocent III says, “The Venetians persuaded the army to divert the Crusade to Constantinople because they wanted to depose one emperor and replace him with another. Outraged, Innocent excommunicated the Venetians, but he could not thwart their plans. The fleet arrived in Constantinople, and after a siege the city fell into Latin hands (April 12, 1204). Innocent accepted the result, mistakenly believing that the conquest of Constantinople would reunite the Latin and Greek churches. Instead, the Latins ruled over a truncated empire until 1261 and irrevocably weakened it. After the Greeks regained control of the Byzantine Empire and church, they rejected papal authority, and the two churches have remained divided.”

Of course not! That’s not the way the Church worked at that time.
