Hello everyone, my priest prayed some prayers of deliverance over me and I felt so much peace and slept for 12-14 hours right afterwards. Usually I can only get around 5 hours or so, sometimes less. I try so hard to get 8 hours like I used to. My sleep has been interfering with my memory and ability to function as a student and am working also. Any good help/guidance would be appreciated. I told my priest how my sleep was so deep and peaceful after the deliverance prayers (or some form of exorcism, not sure if that’s the right word for it) and how I was able to sleep so much after it. Could this all be from evil? I want to be free from it all!

I don’t think anyone on this site is qualified to give you advice on this. If this priest isn’t already your spiritual director, I suggest you ask him if he could do so and stick with what he says.

I know when I was very ill and received Extreme Unction, the profound tranquility I experienced for a long time afterwards was one of the most uplifting experiences I have ever had. All doubts, fears and anxiety was banished. I too, have troubles sleeping…I have had a lifetime of mental health issues, anxiety, depression and DID etc. These have all been medicated until recently when I decided to quit the round of drugs. Do you pray when you are wakeful? I find a decade of the rosary a wonderful method of soothing myself to sleep, and I keep a crucifix and holy water by my bedside.

Lots of people have sleep issues. I certainly would not jump to the conclusion that it is some kind of spiritual malady. Far more often it is the result of bad sleep habits. Google good sleep habits and begin to follow them. Decompress several hours before bed. Have a routine. No screens for at least an hour before bed. Take melatonin. Drink warm milk. Etc.

I second the suggestion that the priest who actually helped you is the one to talk to concerning your emotional response to the prayers on your behalf. I had a spiritual “high” once, reported it to my pastor, and although he thought that was nice he also warned me not to confuse spiritual consolations with the daily bread of grace. Many of the saints went through some very emotionally and spiritually difficult times and it wasn’t because they weren’t on the right track spiritually!

Having said that, compare the night of good sleep with the other nights you have had. You could have poor sleep habits. You could have an anxiety issue that was eased. What you don’t want to do is to have a good night’s sleep after a prayer for your freedom from evil, then have a poor night’s sleep, and then conclude that you’re possessed or being tormented by a demon. No, not necessarily so.

Here is some recent advice that helped me, for instance:

I would suggest that you pursue better “sleep hygiene” if you aren’t able to sleep as much as you need to sleep in spite of setting aside the proper amount of time for it. It doesn’t have to be just one thing that is interfering with your sleep. You have been shown that you are capable of a good nights’ sleep, and that is a big deal. A long stretch of poor sleep can also lead to some erroneous thinking about yourself and the world, too.
