I don’t know how many other people have had similar experiences.
A few days ago, my daughter started having abdominal pain during her last class period of the school day. She came home and felt nauseous, and when I got off work and came home (about 2 hours after the abdominal pain started), she threw up about 5 minutes after I came in. She threw up another time, and I’m doing some quick looking for symptoms.
She did not have classic signs of appendicitis (in fact, the symptom checker put the most likely dx as indigestion, 2nd most likely being gastroenteritis. But I just didn’t feel that was right (I was sure indigestion wasn’t it, people do not vomit like that – the first was an almost entirely undigested contents of her lunch, which happened to be the same lunch I had had --I’d made a pasta/shrimp dish that was enough for us both).
Then this voice behind me (but not heard by anyone else) said “It’s appendicitis”. Now, her symptoms totally did not match appendicitis in terms of where the pain was and the character of the pain. But I decided to take her to the ER because of the little voice.
Well, they did a CT, and found her appendix had gotten to 11mm (appendix bursting happens frequently at 13-15mm).
They called the surgeon on call, who determined the best course was to admit her overnight and run IV antibiotics and do surgery in the morning. So that’s what happened, and she’s home now, resting well.
Fortunately, since hers had not burst, they were still able to do the surgery laparoscopically, which is so much better for easier recovery.
So I don’t know if it was just some mother’s instinct, or maybe her guardian angel speaking–I’m just glad I didn’t wait any longer.
Anyone else have experiences getting these insights that are right, yet the available info is pointing to something else?
