I just started learing the Creighton method for NFP and I was wondering if anyone knew if NFP is covered by insurance? It costs money for each session and it is starting to add up.

you would have to ask your insurance company. some cover it, some don’t.

I’ve tried and they seem very confused b/c it’s not actually a DRUG!!! Just thought I’d check and see if anyone else was reimbursed so I have “armor” when I call back and try to fight for it. 🙂

If you are enrolled in one of those Flexible Medical Spending Accounts (or whatever it is they have renamed them to these days), at minimum, you could pay for the fees with your pre-tax dollars.

As far as insurance, ask them, It varies by policy.

Have you checked the self-study course offered by the Couple to Couple League (CCL) who teach the Sympto-Thermal method? I bought the course approximately 10 years ago for $50. It’s excellent. If you have further questions, CCL will answer them by phone, I believe. They also may have instructors in your area, but I don’t know if and how much they charge.

CCLI charges $75 for a series for 4 classes usually scheduled a month apart. They also have a home study course, which is the same price, I believe.

As long as you renew your membership (first year is included in the price), you can take classes for free. So if you are seeking pregnancy or near menopause, it’s helpful to have a refresher.

And we recommend couples attend the class, not just one spouse (hence the name “couple to couple”).
.

We attended one class at a Catholic hospital- it was $60 and basically we can mail our charts in to the nurse for life and have them reviewed and mailed back to us free of charge

That will be the day when I can get my husband to attend such a class. I do practice NFP and don’t think most insurances would cover it. Thanks for the info about the CCL self teaching books being a great tool. I had wanted to purchase it, but was kinda skeptical because it was a bit pricy.

if this is such an important issue (our civilization rises and falls with the family according to JPII) why doesn’t the church provide these training courses and booklets free of charge. if protestant churches can raise enough money to hand out hundreds of bibles for free (not to mention tracts and tapes) why can’t the largest church in the world (and it’s members) help folks who can’t afford all of this training. i would suspect (at least in america) that most parishes have a doctor (or two) in the congregation. also, the books would probably be cheaper if bought in bulk and the parish could pass that savings onto it’s parishoners. also, if enough catholics made noise to insurance companies and enough catholic doctors would make the case that nfp is as or more effective that abc, the insurance companies would have to begin covering the classes and books. i know this is a rant, but i had to say it.

But with only about 10 to 25% of Catholics actually being obedient in this teaching (including many priests), many times it is an uphill battle even in our own Catholic parishes. Though, I think there are many signs this is beginning to change.

My Archdiocese requires NFP training for wedding preparation. If a couple cannot afford the class (not just NFP classes), the diocese or parish will cover the cost.

As for handing information, join your local CCL chapter, or similar organization. We make every attempt to handout tapes/CDs of Janet Smith’s talk, brochures, and sell books as cheap as possible to educate those interested. This is at parish events, conventions, etc.

Most Couple to Couple League teachers and their chapters have “scholarships”, if you will, to have couples recieve the training free of charge. We have a couple of supporters who will pick up the $75 class fee at any time we ask. I don’t think cost should ever keep a couple from learning NFP, and neither does CCL Central. I will note that some parishes that are REQUIRING NFP class attendance are paying for the classes. We, as CCL instructors, are volunteers, and do not get paid money for teaching (though we seem to get an abundance of GRACE, a much more valuable commodity). The instruction fee is to pay for the efforts of CCL Central, and the material costs of the supplies.

I will add that anything a couple actually pays for is more likely to be used by that couple, and that is part of the concept for charging the fee amount we charge. The real costs of the classes is much higher, but the Couple to Couple League defrays the cost with ongoing memberships from other couples. Thus, the couples who use and benefit from the CCL organization help subsidize the new couples who come to learn NFP.

OK…this question shows how niave I am but

Do most insurance companies cover artificial contraception?

I am thinking that most don’t because they are elective, but I wouldn’t know…Anyone?

Oh yeah…most insurance companies are glad to cooperate with the Culture of Death and help pay for contraceptives…

I am currently in battle with my Insurance company (United Healthcare) about this very issue.

The insurance company has been great about everything else but I feel it is discriminatory for them to pay for ABC and not NFP when given by a medical professional.

I know it’s not much help…but that’s my rant. Feel free to PM me if you want to talk more about it. We can share strategy.

Some do. Then you have others, like the Blue Cross/Blue Shield offered through my workplace, which doesn’t cover artificial contraception but DOES cover elective abortions in full.
Still trying to figure out what sense that makes. Fortunately we have a handful of choices at our workplace, and even though my insurance covers artificial contraception (which I am no longer using so it is a moot point for me), it refuses to cover any aspect of an elective abortion. Thank goodness.

My guess is that it’s largely because Catholic parishes are spending their funds on running Catholic schools, and the Diocese are also running hospitals, mission work, elderly care, Catholic Charities with its outreaches to the homesless, the immigrants, and the disabled and shut-ins, and so forth and so on. Most Protestant churches do not run schools, and few if any non-Catholic denominations have the number and scope of outreach and social care servicves that your local Catholic diocese provides.

Spending $75 bucks for a LIFETIME of natural family planning does not seem exhorbitant to me. It would be great if insurance covered it, but then it would also be great if they would cover the disfiguring orthodontic problems my nephew has, however they say thats “elective”, so…
