Today at Mass the priest, who hasn’t genuflected at the Consecration in the 10 years I’ve known him, made a show of genuflecting, looked at the congregation with a smile and said “I hope someone will let the bishop know,” provoking laughter, then proceeded to continue with the consecration of the wine.

I noticed also that, rather than passing the Ciborium around like a candy dish the way he normally does, he actually gave Communion to the altar servers and EMHCs. He still did it before he even said “This is the Lamb of God…” and they all received together, but at least the new Bishop’s visit produced some positive results although it was obvious that Fr. didn’t agree.
 
Well, it’s great that there have been positive changes. Marvellous. However, I’m not one to be thankful for an insult just because it’s not a slap in the face. This Priest is still doing a lot wrong (so it seems from your post) and has the wrong attitude. He shouldn’t be praised for doing what is required (not saying you’ve praised him; I mean in general).

Making jokes during the consecration? Despicable.
 
Did he ever explain why he never genuflected at the consecration? I’m just interested in understanding his motives because, on the face of it, he comes off seeming childish and rebellious. Hopefully, that’s not it.

I’m not sure why he never did. At first I thought it might be his religious congregation, because some of the others in his congregation also don’t genuflect, but then we got a much older priest from the same congregation as our pastor and, in spite of the fact that he had to hold on to the altar so as not to fall over and to be able to get back up again, he always genuflected so it’s not that. I think he’s just a product of the 70s.

The sad reality is that attitude like that spreads. I realized that when we had a couple of young Polish priests from the same congregation come to do a stint in our parish. They always genuflected during Mass when they got here but after a couple of weeks with our priests they stopped doing it and resorted to bowing.
