Went to my new Doc this morn. I asked her about some stats comparing NFP with ABCs. She said in perfect use studies NFP comes out on top, even over sterilization. The only thing better is castration or total abstinence. She said that in actual use NFP is no worse thatn ABCs. She gave me some studies to take home to thick headed DH. Then to top it all off, she said that China will allow only those people using NFP be exempt from being sterilized; they won’t condone any other forms of BC because the failure rates are higher!!

You are very fortunate to have an informed, supportive doc!
Kudos!

Thanks for sharing that. As a user, (therefore sometimes defender) of NFP, it is useful to know these things.

That’s awesome!

Just as a side note, I was looking up the causes of gum disease yesterday and one of the causes was oral contraception! I was surprised at that. Those who use the pill, Ye be warned!

My wife and I are going to start using NFP after our next child is born (no need to worry about it when she is pregnant 👍 ). I was wondering, for those who use, if they think their relationship has improved with their spouse since using NFP. This article seems to paint a pretty glowing picture of NFP use. From the article:

A scientific survey conducted in 2000 under the direction of Dr. Robert Lerner of the University of Chicago showed that couples who use NFP have a 0.2% divorce rate, attend church more often and have happier, stronger marriages. With NFP intimacy and communication are enhanced. The family is made stronger and consequently society is made stronger. Not only is the Church’s position not out of touch or impractical, it is the solution for much of what ails us.

Would those who use NFP agree?

The ccli.org and creightonmodel.com websites both have studies of effectiveness. Be cautious of the studies given by your doctor, they may include calendar methods (that skew the effectiveness rates) all under the NFP category along with the more scientific methods. Just so you know, I’ve seen this a couple of times.

My doctor is an NFP doc. She uses STM herself. I just found her 2 weeks ago because of someone here at CA. I am so grateful!!

I would start now, because there is a ramp-up time with starting NFP, and you might be able to overlap some of that during the pregnancy.

The Chinese value very highly anything that is natural; i.e herbal remedies, etc. The failure rates are high becuase they won’t use them or refuse to use them properly. But they follow NFP to a tee b/c it, well, natural.

Excellent that you found this doctor.

It is very rare to find a Doctor that supports NFP. I find doctors have this look like oh you are so stupid to be following that.

The reports I’ve heard about Chinese sterilization (such as through this Zenit article) do not paint such a pretty picture of what China allows, unfortunately. It appears that it is largely up to the local authorities to decide what to do. Here are some relevant quotes:
Zenit:
Chen, who lives in Linyi, a city to the southeast of the capital, had protested against local measures that required parents with two children to be sterilized and women pregnant with a third child to undergo abortions. Three days later the Washington Post reported that Chen had been confined to his home by authorities and couldn’t receive visitors.

Time magazine in its Sept. 19 issue also reported on the events in the province. The article graphically described the case of a forced abortion of a 9-month-old unborn child being carried by Li Juan.
and
Zenit:
Faced with criticisms by provincial leaders that the birthrate was too high, local officials launched a campaign in March to eliminate what they considered to be the extra births. Time magazine described the operation as “one of the most brutal mass sterilization and abortion campaigns in years.” In one county alone at least 7,000 people were forced to undergo sterilization between March and July. According to Time, several villagers were beaten to death for trying to help family members avoid sterilization.

Yeah, I went to my doctor before I got married, for a routine physical. We hadn’t really met before (since I was generally healthy) so he asked about me and my life, etc. Anyway, I told him I was engaged so he asked about “reproductive health.” From his question, he assumed we were having sex already, so I replied, “We * will be* using NFP.”

After I explained to him what NFP was, all he said was, “Well, good luck with that.” 😦

Yeah, when my new doctor asked “what contraceptive method I was using” I told her we used natural family planning. I got a laugh and a “well when you get pregnant let me know” - I just like stared at her and she looked a little embarassed and changed the subject. Since then she hasn’t really made any comments like that. Hopefully she realized how rude she was being.

Once I had to go to a walk- in for something and the physicians assistant had never even heard of NFP being used to avoid pregnancy. I explained the STM to him and he seemed really interested. I couldn’t believe that I was teaching him something new. Amazing.

I’ve looked for NFP docs in my area but the closest is like 3 hours away, unfortunately.

I wasn’t speaking about the gov’t, but of the mentality if it’s people.

I believe NFP fosters better communication and respect between spouses, but i fear that the statistics are slightly abused.

There may, in fact, be a 0.2% divorce rate among NFP users, but this does not PROVE causation. NFP users are mostly faithful believers who have personal prayer lives and understand the need for Grace to perfect their sinfulness. I suspect this has more to do with the divorce rate than NFP.

Were we to somehow convince Joe/Sheila Public to drop the Pill and use NFP instead merely as a means of birth control, I suspect the divorce rate would change rather quickly!

In other words, I would think the tiny divorce rate among NFP users has more to do with the kinds of people that practice it than the method itself.

All that said, I would say that it DOES help guard against married sex becoming a mutually self-gratifying event rather than a self-giving event. And that’s gotta help some!
