Interesting reader's comments on Yancey, Church: Why Bother?

“Everyone who has attended church with regularity can understand boredom and indifference among the congregants. Services are often not conducive to worship. Avoiding an abstract, depersonalized discussion of the matter, Philip Yancey relates his own reflections and experiences during his Christian pilgrimage. Rather than going to church services wondering how they will minister to US, we should go to church services to worship GOD. Our attention should be directed outward (“How did God view my worship?”) rather than inward (“I got nothing out of that church service.”) Sometimes, perhaps most times, we have to conduct our worship of God DESPITE being in church. But that is what we should do.”

I wandered into this reader’s comments and I tend to agree with them. THAT’s why I go to church, for starters.

Then, also, as Fr. John Riccardo (EWTN Radio program, Christ is the Answer) says, Jesus wants to give himself to us, in an intensely physical and personal way.

The last sentence is just really nonsense. “DESPITE being in church”!?! Then where!!
 
“despite” yes, I agree, it can be stifling hot in church, the ushers don’t crack a window or turn on a ceiling fan (at the very least), the singers can be off-key, the music can be awful, you may be surrounded by immature teenagers misbehaving – like the one that was intentionally bumping shoulders with his mom sunday of last week

the pastor read the entire passion himself, but he paused 5 times to sing solo songs and later his homily was about the lyrics of a Crosby, Stills, and Nash song of the 80’s, people are chewing gum in church, even as they approach the Eucharist. 1/4 of the church empties after the Eucharist, etc. many distractions, priest telling jokes during the Mass. So it goes.
