I just found this video on YouTube about Native American Catholics and I loved it. What do you all think of it and have any of you been to a native american catholic mass or anything similar?

I hope this is the right category for this, feel free to move it if it isn’t.

I’ve never been to it, but I do love the idea of inculturation. Surely there is much good teaching and practice in various Native traditions, and all that is good and true and beautiful ought to be incorporated into our own belief system.

The church in the 1600’s was working on being more culturally inclusive. The protestant reformation destroyed that. Scientifically and socially the Catholics were ions ahead of the protestants for many, many decades.

The only problem I have with this is that it’s really representative of a small portion of Native Americans–the Plains indians and really dosn’t reflect what atleast from my knowlege is that of say, the Northeastern natives or the southwestern ones.

Archbishop Chaput of Philadelphia is Native American and enrolled in a tribe.

That is very interesting. I did not know that.

I have not been to a Native American Mass, but my husband is Mexican indigenous and I have been to Mass in his town. They do include some unique cultural traditions. Also he is teaching our daughters their prayers in both Spanish and his Indian language.

I’ve been to midnight Christmas Mass at an Apache mission. The only discernable difference was that drums were employed at the Gloria.
