Oh yes, your post reminded me of a book that chronicled the story of a priest that performed a marriage between a white woman and a Hispanic man. The priest was later killed by the woman’s father. The title of the book escapes me though.
If you remember it, let me know. I would love to read it.

I think that this is the book your are thinking of. It is a fascinating and true story, featuring a future supreme court justice.

That is a rather circular argument, in that you define only heterosexual sex as ‘marital’ and then assert that only ‘marital sex’ justifies marriage.

And again, you are making marriage all about sex. Or one particular sex act. Or at least the possibility of one particular sex act.

Yet those who think marriage is about a loving relationship between two people are the ones cheapening marriage?
The more marriages you have the more divorces you have and the more divorces you have the more the attorneys will rake in the big bucks and clog up the court systems.

I guess we should just ban divorces, that’d free up the courts, wouldn’t it?

I may have to read it. I wonder if the father was acquitted…?

So… if they get a divorce, who’s the man (custody, child support, etc…)? Who takes whose name when they marry? Just doesn’t seem well thought out to me… Nobody ever has those questions in an interracial marriage.

I agree with Kendra… I think the whole SSM and interracial marriage is like apples and oranges.

Um, it’s not universal for women to take their their husband’s surname and it never has, not in the Western world or even the Anglo world and of course it was England that gave the US the idea that a wife is property so I’m not sure they qualify as a good example of what to do regarding family law.

You mean the girl’s father who shot the Catholic priest? It’s a true story, and full of history, and yet it reads like a novel, so I don’t want to give away the ending! It also provides insight into that era in that time and place. Racial segregation was accepted. So was visceral anti-Catholicism, which was taken for granted.
