Recently, a visitor to our parish became irrate because she couldn’t dip the Host into the Precious Blood. I was told that she could have if she had asked the chalicer to take the Host for her and dip it into the Precious Blood, then give her Communion on the tongue. Is this right? I always thought intinction was a no-no. It seems crazy…first she would recieve the Host in the hand, walk over to the chalicer and put it in his/her hand. The chalicer dips it and then places it on her tongue. That seems like an awful lot of handling of the Host!
 
Why was she making such a demand and such a spectacle of herself in the first place?

Good question. She said it was ok in her diocese. Our pastor called her diocese and they said they DO NOT allow self intinction. Maybe at her church, they allow her to do it, but, of course, someone is not being obedient.

In the Latin rite, intinction is one of the allowable methods of distributing the Precious Blood (others are spoon, straw, chalice). What’s NOT allowable, is “self-intinction” where the communicant intict the Host herself.

I don’t believe either of these would be acceptable under GIRM 2000, except perhaps because of an extraordinary medical condition of a communicant.

The Faithful and EMHC are not to do this. Only a priest may offer Holy Communion by intinction.
 
By golly it is still allowed!
The Blood of the Lord may be received either by drinking from the chalice directly, or by intinction, or by means of a tube or a spoon. (GIRM §245)

Are deacons permitted to do this? As ministers of the Cup, I would think so, but I’m not sure.

At my parish, the First Communicants ALL receive by intinction.

As I read the documents I does not appear that a Deacon should. However they are to assist the priest by holding the Chalice. A Paten under the chin is also required so an altar server is also required it would seem.
