What sort of intruder was this?
Burglar.

I don’t use foul language. Yesterday I was unable to formulate a sentence that did not contain at least two examples…

I own several firearms including a pump.

I didn’t think my actions were terribly sinful. I wanted to hear what others thought.

Thanks. 🙂

Well, since the goal of any self-defense situation is to survive it with as little injury to yourself or others as possible, I think you did very well. Who knows, a meek response may have emboldened them. Your strong words worked, you can monday morning quarterback all you want to but you’ll never know if a different course of action would have resulted in a much worse result.

Well, if you’re going to use a shotgun for self-defense they shouldn’t be able to hear the racking sound** because they’re deaf from you firing the round you keep chambered before having to rack the slide to chamber the next one.** (120+db in an enclosed space really makes your ears ring).
Did you mean “deaf,” or “dead?”

😉

I’m amazed you were able to get him to leave simply by yelling at him. Thank goodness you weren’t killed! Did he get anything? I know the intelligent thing to do is to not engage a potentially murderous thief, but I think if I caught someone stealing from me I would be so enraged I would try to beat him over the head with whatever object came in handy. I absolutely hate people who steal. I know were supposed to be fogiving and all, and maybe after the fact I might be forgiving if I’m not dead, but I’m pretty sure one of us would end up dead in that situation. It’s probably best I don’t know how to shoot a gun.

You did fine.

A number of years ago I was walking back to my apartment from the subway when I felt an object in my back and a threatening voice telling me to give up my money.

I don’t know why this happened, but I turned and started screaming the Prayer to St. Michael at the top of my lungs, and started to fight the mugger, who turned out to have a stick instead of a gun or a knife. I’m pretty athletic, and can fight if I have to, even though I’m less than 130 lbs and look delicate. I don’t know if St. Michael personally intervened, or the mugger just thought I was crazy, or a little of both, but as some of my blows connected, he tried to get away from me. I had him by the edge of his jacket and punched him in the mouth. He managed to shake free and started running away, and I started to run after him, yelling, “Yeah! You just keep on running, and if I can’t kick your ----, St. Michael will!”

I look back and shudder that I would even consider fighting back, but for whatever reason, it worked. I still have the scar on my right hand, third knuckle, where I got him in the teeth to remind me of the incident.🤷

I wouldn’t recommend this course of action to anyone, but I sincerely pray that the guy needed some dental work as a result!

Glad you are OK. You didn’t harm or shot the person. No one got hurt. I would say everyone got lucky in this situation.
Where I live if someone breaks into a house as an intruder, it is obvious they have bad intentions from the get go and they are likely not to just get a simple cussing out.
If you were a single woman in the same situation this might not have turned out to be the same story. The person who came into your place has probably done this before to others and will do it again. I would report to the police ASAP with a good description of the suspect. Maybe even try to dust for prints and figure out where they got in so it doesn’t happen again as easily if there is a next time and the person brings back up or a weapon. I watch a lot of forensic files.

You should have probably been more charitable, because it might have been an opportunity to give a christian witness.

You did much better than I would have. I’m pretty sure that the 9 might have had a thing or two to say…

Speaking of Christian witness… 😃 St. Elizabeth of Hungary gave a spanking to a beggar woman who was healthy, just lazy to work.

The same St. Elizabeth who’s better known for her charity, almsgiving, and caring for the sick and poor…

…but I’m sure the lazy beggar got the Christian witness she needed, in a form that she understood and would remember for at least a few days afterwards! 😛

I awoke from a nap on Saturday afternoon to find an intruder in my apartment.

I don’t think I handled the situation the same way that Jesus would have. :o Leaving out the expletives… I told him to leave immediately or I would kill him. Adrenaline was high. He only had a moment to turn and leave before I was going to attempt to beat him into a submissive non-threatening state. He quickly left.

What do you think? Sinful? Should have handled it differently? Thanks.
I don’t think Jesus would hold this against you. Had he been a beggar at your door asking for food, that would be a different story. .

Might I suggest you invest in a nice pump-action shotgun? There isn’t a whole lot scarier in the world than the sound of a round being racked in a dark house.
shotgun + non-lethal rounds [effective and not as messy as lethal rounds] + training on the proper use of both

If you’re going to point a gun at someone, you need to be ready and willing to kill them. There is nothing more dangerous than a gun in the hands of someone not prepared to use them. This is when they get turned on their owners.

If you’re going to have a gun around, know the laws of your state. Do a lot of research about ‘Less Lethal’ ammunition before you consider using it-- particularly legal implications. '‘Less Lethal’ will normally not kill a person but can under certain conditions. Look at the difference between involuntary manslaughter and homicide with a positive justification of self-defense. Talk to a laywer in your area with experience in self-defense cases.

If you’re worried about security a gun is a last resort you use because locks/lights/alarms/warning signs/dogs were all defeated or ignored by the intruder and your life is in danger. Hard to justify, IMHO, employing something that may not do the job of keeping you and the loved ones you are responsible for alive.

As a tip- Police do not employ ‘Less Lethal’ rounds without a backup/second person with normal ammunition. That is because ‘Less Lethal’ often does not stop or incapacitate a person.

As I said earlier to the OP, goal in self-defense is to stay alive. Good to stay alive and stay out of court as well.

Since you had no clue if that intruder wanted to steal your TV or kill you- I think you handled the issue very well. Defending oneself when in danger is perfectly acceptable.

Charity? Were Christians!
What does that mean? “Charity? Were Christians!” Did you mean WE’RE Christians? Apostrophes are your friends!

What does having a watchdog have to do with being a Christian? It is perfectly acceptable to protect your family by whatever means possible. If an intruder is in my home, he is not there to have tea with me. He is looking to steal my stuff and/or hurt my family. If I can scare him away without actually harming him (i.e. watchdog and/or pump action shotgun) then that IS charity.

Should an attacker get too close (which can happen VERY fast), a long gun is not what you want in your hands. In a struggle, leverage would not be your friend…Stick with the small stuff.
