As I have been studying Catholicism and about God, I keep having really bad intrusive thoughts against God. For example, bad talking the Holy Spirit is one of the worse things you could possibly do and I have absolutely no intention to talk bad about the Holy Spirit but I do, for example I will get this intrusive thought of me hating the Holy Spirit (even typing that felt wrong) and I have to repeatedly say I love the Holy Spirit until that thought stops. That is just one example but there are lots of them, some not about God but still bad thoughts lol. Basically my main question is should I keep trying to override them and does God appreciate me trying to stop it or does God understand and there is no need to override them?

Dóminus Vobíscum!

Hey, as someone with OCD and Anxiety, I can attest to having severe intrusive thoughts. Ranging from blasphemous to other genres of thoughts. Intrusive thoughts are just thoughts. They become sinful IF you willingly think them for the purpose of offending God. Also, on a spiritual note, Satan cannot stand it if one grows closer to Our Father. He’ll use all manner of temptation and affliction to drive a wedge between us and the Father.

If these thoughts persist, seek psychological help and or spiritual counsel. I promise they are semi-natural to a point, granted if they are unwanted and not consented to in nature. Don’t worry, Trust in His Mercy.

Also, just ignore them and let them go. Say a little prayer or shake them off. No harm done. God understands our hearts as well.

Yes, please talk to a health professional and get some help for your intrusive thoughts. I’m sorry you’re struggling. I’d also advise you to speak with a Priest and get spiritual guidance.

I see someone for anxiety but now thinking back I never really talk to him about my intrusive thoughts, maybe I should next time I see him. Thank you, God bless you

Those kinds of thoughts used to be called Imps of the Perverse. Lots of people get them. Not everyone gets ones like those - some of us get images of deliberately hitting people with cars (for no reason) or lustful ideas or other inappropriate things - but lots of people get them. They aren’t deliberate so they aren’t a sin unless you willingly keep them around.

In your case you immediately turn to and profess a love for God to drive the idea out of your head. I’m pretty sure He appreciates that a lot.

As for seeing someone about them, my general advice is to seek medical advice if something is seriously interfering with your ability to live life and/or love God. You have to be the one to determine where that threshold is.

**I would say "they are not a sin unless you willingly keep them around with the intention of blaspheming."

People with OCD often “keep thoughts around” analytically, and obsess over them, but it is not out of malice. They often are very distressed about the thoughts and wish they weren’t there, but are “obsessing” and ruminating in their anxiety, and can’t move on.

I write this as someone with OCD/scrupulosity.

The way I was parsing it, people with OCD unwillingly keep them around.

it could be coming from the devil. The way to get rid of them is through disciplining your mind to instantly dismiss them with the blink of a eye and replace them with mental praise for God. Don’t overthink it, just discipline your mind. Evil thoughts usually come from wicked spirits, and they sometimes occur out of the blue when somebody is making bold new steps toward spiritual progress. Don’t be discouraged, but instead paint an image in your mind to replace it. For example if the wicked thought is of something impure or blasphemous, have a ready image in your mind to replace it, i.e. St. Michael leading an angelic army and victoriously driving and pounding the wicked spirits down into the fiery abyss.

Spiritual warfare is part of spiritual growth. Eventually they will get tired of being trounced by St Michael and move on. Here is a good article on the saints and wicked thoughts:

That is just one example but there are lots of the
Intrusive thoughts are part of the OCD family of illnesses. See your doctor and seek a referral to a mental health professional.

Also obtain a spiritual director through your pastor.
